  • What is the difference between a herniated disc and a bulging disc?

A bulging disc is an early injury, think of it as a swollen ankle. The disc is bulging but hasn't quite broken through the annulus fibrosis. A herniated disc is a disc that has herniated out of its central position, but also has extended past the borders of the disc. Clearly both may be painful, however, clinically speaking, the herniated disc takes a bit longer to treat, and is considered the worse of the two. Non-surgical Spinal Decompression will generally help both of these, with a bulging disc, you may need 3-6 session, with a herniated disc, it may take 12-20 sessions. READ MORE

  • Can chiropractic care help with arm pain?

The short answer: Yes. The long answer: The Cervical nerves that leave the neck travel down into the arm. Sometimes the pain comes from the neck ie pinched nerve, sometimes it is an alignment issue, humeral head is misaligned or too far anterior, compressing the brachial Plexus, which would cause arm pain. Sometimes just altering a few things, like, stop sleeping on your stomach, and hugging a pillow while you sleep and using a cervical pillow will alleviate arm pain. If the pain is not coming from the neck, the nerves that supply the arm; the radial, medial, or ulnar nerve can be compressed under the biceps brachii, or the elbow joint can be misaligned (someone that pushes or pulls at work) and the nerves can be irritated as the transverse the bone. In short, getting a focused exam of neck, shoulder, elbow, and wrist can diagnosis what is causing the arm pain, but thoracic outlet syndrome is a rather common cause. So, if you are wondering if a chiropractor can help with arm pain, I see and treat arm pain weekly in my practice and get great results. I hope you don't wait too long to go and get checked out. Good luck. READ MORE

  • What is the best treatment for back pain?

Depending on how bad your back pain is, rest, ice, massage and chiropractic is a great place to start. If the pain is severely acute, rest and medications for a few days could also help before starting active care. After pain has subsided and medications are no longer needed, some deeper mobilization, and muscle energy techniques Ie GRASTON, or ART will continue to help the problem. Some physical rehabilitation always seems to help when the patient is ready. I often ask why doctors prescribe physical therapy right after an injury. The joints and muscles need time to heal, before you start introducing exercise into an injury. This could easily prolong the injury. 3-6 weeks of passive therapy before starting active therapy has almost always been my go-to protocol. READ MORE

  • Why does my lower back crack?

You are self-manipulating your spine. Those popping sounds are gas (CO2 and Nitrogen) escaping the joint space. It is generally innocuous if it is done by a professional. It can also be a sign of hypermobility. So, go get checked out by a recommended Chiropractor in your area. He or She should be able to better answer that question as it pertains to you...after examining you. READ MORE

  • Is chiropractic treatment safe for babies?

Adjusting babies takes as much force as playing a piano. Yes, babies get chiropractic adjustments all the time. I had a patient bring in their baby after it had fallen off the bed, and it would not stop crying and sleep was not happening. They were truck drivers and were going over the road the next day. I saw them on Sunday and the baby had a moderate subluxated C1 cervical vertebra...this is what I found. I found it and corrected it. I saw the patients daughter a total of 3x in 2 weeks and she was fine after that. Babies are the best patients, because we see the results almost immediately. I have adjusted all my children and grand children. READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor help with a fractured vertebrae?

I have treated patients with a compressed (compression fracture) vertebra of T12. Every adjustment hurt, but they were adjusted almost daily for 3 weeks. They missed about 4 days of work and had no disability and very little residual symptoms. They do need a maintenance visit from time to time, but otherwise, no surgery or vertebroplasty needed. Each vertebra and type of fracture needs to be independently evaluated and not all fracture vertebra can or should be manipulated. It is generally safe to manipulate the fractured vertebra after 6-8 weeks, so don't wait too long and let chronicity settle in and incapatitate you. Definition of Vertebroplasty is a procedure in which a special cement is injected into a fractured vertebra — with the goal of relieving your spinal pain and restoring your mobility. Not all people with fractured vertebrae are candidates for the procedure, however. READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor really straighten your spine?

We have 4 natural curves in our spine. So be careful of any chiropractor that says they can straighten your spine. Can we help with misalignments? Yes, we can help with misalignments. A subluxation is a vertebra or joint that is slightly out of alignment and it is usually compressing a nerve, causing pain. I hope this answers your questions. READ MORE

  • How often should you see a chiropractor for neck pain?

If your neck was injured in a sports incident or auto accident or even a work injury, we recommend 3x a week for 4 weeks, pending re-eval. If progress is made, we reduce to 1-2x a week until the patient is Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI). For minor aches and pains, I usually recommend 2x per week for for 3 weeks. READ MORE

  • What are the treatment options for hip arthritis?

Keeping the joint stretched and mobile if possible is a noble goal. That can be done by spinal decompression, pin and stretch manual therapies, massage therapy, acupuncture, anti-inflammation diet, and muscle evaluation for a muscle strengthening program. As part of stretching and mobilization; selective joint manipulation is a great addition, a very effective treatment. READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor help in treating migraines?

I've had good outcomes. The ones most difficult to treat are the hormonal migraines. The first four bones in the neck share nerves with the head. Keeping the cervical spine movement functional with chiropractic techniques has a positive impact on many types of headaches. But you'll never know if you don't try it. Trying an elimination diet in conjunction with chiropractics may provide a better outcome. See a chiropractor that practices nutrition. READ MORE

  • Is there a treatment for degenerative disc disease?

Some will say exercise, some will say chiropractic, while others will say keep her comfortable and only massage. From 12 years in clinical practice, a light stretching program and some non-surgical spinal decompression slowly increased over 6 sessions will likely make her feel much better. Btw, most of us at age 80 will have degenerative disc disease and degenerative joint disease. 80 years of use and abuse wears out the joints. Minimally invasive therapies to give her as much comfort and pain relief which could include all the therapies mentioned in my first few sentances above. The one thing you dont want to do is...nothing. That will only make it worse. READ MORE

  • My son suffers from ADHD. Should I bring him to a chiropractor?

I think all patients with ADD and ADHD should try chiropractic care. It calms the nerves. Reduces nerve irritability, relaxes muscles, helps properly align joints...all things that ALL of us could benefit from. I know the drug route looks and sounds easy, and it is. But if you get manageable results with no invasive drugs, wouldn't we all be pleased? READ MORE

  • My posture is getting a little slouched. What should I do?

A chiropractor will help with the immediate fixing of your bad posture, but the hard part, exercise and behavioral changes, needs to come from you. Avoiding activities that make you slouch would be one proactive change/recommendation that you could start immediately, i.e., not using your cell, laptop, sitting so much, etc. READ MORE

  • I feel my posture has bent after delivery. What can I do?

The abdominal muscles have been stretched and are therefore likely weak. A comprehensive physical conditioning program should include walking, light running, treadmill, elliptical, and weights. A spinal exam from a licensed chiropractor should identify what is pulling you forward. You didn't mention if you had a C-section, but even if you didn't, those muscles are weak and will need some activity to restore the spinal integrity. READ MORE

  • I am having severe neck pain. What could be the reason?

Shooting or radiating pain implies you have a nerve that is compressed. After an exam, if you can handle it, some heat, ultra sound, gentle mobilization to see if the neck is able to handle a specific manipulation to take the pressure off the nerve. A gentle massage after your adjustment may ease an soreness. Sleeping on your stomach, and text neck are primary culprits with neck pain like yours. Your complaint is a very common patient in every chiropractic clinic. Get in, get checked, and if you like what you hear, get treated. Who has 6 weeks to wait for neck or back pain to go away on its own. READ MORE

  • I have just suffered a slip Disc. After how long can I start by back exercises?

Sounds like a second opinion is warranted. I only recommend rest for the immediate spasm that is taking place. Bed rest is no longer recommended, because it could lead to a longer recovery or even early disability. Walking slowly and some yoga stretching poses that places extension in the spine should be well tolerated. If it is not, go see your chiropractor, there is always non-surgical spinal decompression as well. READ MORE

  • Are there any symptoms of osteoporosis?

Talk to your PCP to run some bloodwork and/or ask for a DEXA scan aka bone scan. A simple X-ray may also reveal osteopenia, the pre-cursor to osteoporosis. Take iron supplements one week out of the month, if you are not a meat eater. READ MORE

  • Experiencing numbness and pain after elbow fracture treatment. Why is this happening?

Scar tissue and nerve damage is quite likely the cause of the numbness. The pain should subside after about 6 weeks post surgery. If it doesn't, or it gets worse, ask for a follow-up appointment. A short course of pain meds 5 days should be about all most patients need and then some OTC meds for the remainder. READ MORE

  • My mother has developed a problem of shaking hands. What could be the reason behind it?

Parkinson's comes to mind...her PCP could send her to a neurologist to confirm. It could also be a reaction to some medication, especially if she is on many. READ MORE

  • Is there a way to treat back pain arising due to long sitting hours?

Sitting is the new smoking. Taking frequent breaks, i.e. 10 min stand-up break to stretch, out of every hour is recommended. Your Iliopsoas is likely the culprit causing your back pain. It shortens with prolonged sitting. A massage session, followed by a chiropractic evaluation and treatment will get you over the hump. You may need a stand up desk when you're all fixed up. Try yoga 3x a week and walking during your lunch break. READ MORE
