  • What can you take for a toothache while pregnant?

I have had to deal with this question a number of times over the years in practice. I always use the same starting point. Consult with your OB first. Next, go see a dentist and ask him/her evaluate the situation and let them determine. Once the problem has been evaluated and treatment planned, then have the dentist consult with your OB regarding pain control, infection medications if needed and immediate treatment. All of this communication is needed to assure that you and your baby receive safe and appropriate treatment. READ MORE

  • Pain after root canal?

Pain and swelling after a root canal is not unusual. Did your dentist prescribe any pain control medication for you? If he or she did make sure you are taking it as directed. The numbness and swelling does occur in many cases. Here are a couple of general guidelines. The numbness may be longer acting due the type and amount of anesthetic given. Some of them last longer than others. Eventually it will wear off. Swelling does occur. There are two things that may help. Warm soaks on the cheek may help. The warmth will cause the blood vessels to dilate allowing the fluids causing the swelling to drain. Pain: follow any specific instructions the dentist gave you. If you are very uncomfortable, call your dentist and set up an appointment. READ MORE

  • Should an abscessed tooth be pulled?

The abscess indicates that there is a problem with your tooth. However, before a diagnosis can be made and a treatment plan developed. The two most likely problems would be an infected pulp (an endodontic problem) of a gum infection (a periodontal infection). An examination and an X-ray will determine what kind of problem you are dealing with. If it caused by an infection within the tooth, root canal therapy is indicated. If it is gum related, periodontal therapy is indicated. The tooth can saved by therapy or extracted. All your options should be discussed with a dentist. READ MORE

  • Pain and bad taste in mouth. Why isn't it going away?

It is possible that there is a problem with re-infection after the root canal was done. Another possibility is that the crown may be ever so slightly high and need an adjustment. I would suggest that you see your dentist and ask them to evaluate the situation. READ MORE

  • Why does my tooth hurt after a crown?

This is not that unusual. The chances are that the crown (bite) may be a little high and is irritating the tooth. In most cases this can be fixed relatively easily by your dentist with a small adjustment in the bite and polishing. READ MORE

  • Is it normal to have pain after a tooth implant?

  • How do you treat an exposed tooth root?

Without evaluating your situation it would be difficult to give you a specific answer. However, I would recommend that you consult a Periodontist. These dentists specialize in tooth, bone, and gum problems of the mouth. The doctor will evaluate your situation, determine the cause and offer solutions. There are treatments available to solve the problem. READ MORE

  • Why does my filling hurt when I chew?

There may be a couple of reasons why your filling hurts when you chew. First, if it is a new filling the bite may have to be adjusted. The filling may be a little high. Go back to your dentist and have it adjusted. If it is an old filling it have a crack in it and that area around the crack is exposed to the oral environment. If this is the case, the filling may have to be replaced. The tird possibility is that the tooth is cracked vertically through the length of the tooth. This is a little more serious. If this is the case the tooth has to be extracted. As a side note, this happened to me last summer. My Dentist had to extract the split tooth. I will have an dental implant placed and restored in the spring. Good luck to you. I hope your problem can be resolved with a simple new filling. . READ MORE

  • Can facial massages help ease tooth pain?

In some cases, applying pressure to an area of tooth pain may give you some very temporary relief. My best advice is that you see a dentist if this is a persistent problem. READ MORE

Do this repeatedly until the glass is empty. The salt water will help to reduce the swelling. Your new denture may need some adjustment. disuss this with your dentist READ MORE

  • Why does my son keep getting cavities?

Frankly, the root of the problem is home care. Your son may be brushing his teeth but there are a couple of things that need to be done. First, he is a high cavity risk so this needs to be managed. Cavity risk management has been around since the 1990's. The proven data support the use of topical fluoride therapy. Fluoride toothpastes, fluoride mouth rinses (Act, fluoride mouth rinse, fluouoiguard, mouth rinse or store brand generics. These will cut the risks of developing cavities. After brushing AND rinsing have your son chew a stick if sugar free chewing gum for thrity minutes. The gum chewing will increase the saliva flow. The minerals in the saliva will bond with the fluoride and re-mineralize very early cavities. See your dentist and dissuss the application of sealants to the teeth. The cavities that are there need to be filled. The risk management will prevent the formation of new lesions. It sound to me that your son will benefit from a cavity risk management program. • Can wisdom tooth pain go away on its own?

Some pain from a wisdom tooth can go away on its own in some cases. If the pain is caused by the the tooth erupting into the arch, then the pain may be related to this (your teething). If the tooth is already erupted or partially erupted there may be some irritation around the tooth. Try keeping the area clean with a toothbrush and use a hot salt water rinse to reduce the swelling. Take Advil or Tylenol to get some pain relief. If this does not work, see your dentist. READ MORE

  • How long do white fillings last?

Older composite fillings have a tendency to stain. This is related to the patient's diet and habits. If the patient is a heavy smoker, coffee or ta drinker the filling will start to stain. After a year or so, they may seem to darken. In many cases, the color can be restored by the dentist by polishing the stained tooth. This extends the life of the filling for many years. The newer filling materials do hold their color stability longer. READ MORE

Generally, age seven is early to consider orthodontic treatment. The permanent teeth are just starting to come in. However, if there's a question about the position of the erupting teeth, you may want to consult with a pediatric dentist or an orthodontist. If it appears that there may be an issue, you may want to talk about a therapy called guided eruption. This will guide the teeth into better position as they come in. READ MORE

  • Is my jaw pain from wisdom teeth?

It is possible that the pain you are feeling is coming from the eruption of your wisdom teeth or from irritation around the tooth. In order to give you a proper diagnosis and offer you an appropriate treatment plan it has to be examined by your dentist. In the meantime, you may get some temporary relief by taking an over-the-counter pain reliever and rinsing frequently with hot salt water (1 tsp salt in 8 oz glass of water that is as hot as you can stand it).
