Jayanth G. Rao, FAAR, MD, MRCP, is a radiation oncologist at 21st Century Oncology and Florida Regional Cancer Center in Beverly Hills, Florida. Is loss of appetite normal for a patient undergoing radiation therapy?
Modern radiation therapy is also called targeted and precise therapy. Unless the esophagus and or stomach is being treated,loss of appetite and/or nausea/vomiting is highly unusual with radiation treatments. Most people with cancer may also be depressed or have other psychological issues. Please consult your doctor. READ MORE

Is there something to be applied to the rest of the body during a radiation therapy?
No is the short answer. However, it is prudent to cover your skin when you venture out of your home and may be exposed to Ultra-violet rays. READ MORE
My wife is undergoing her chemotherapy for breast cancer. She feels extremely tired after her sessions. Is it normal?
Most people feel lethargic after chemotherapy. Supplements have not shown to be helpful. However, eating a sensible balanced diet and regular exercise may help. READ MORE
My skin looks burnt after a radiation therapy session?
Prevention is always better than cure. I advise my patients to apply moisturizing skin lotion from day 1 and every day after each Radiation treatments, until such time that you see no more discoloration or redness/breakdown of the skin. If you do so, your skin will heal completely. READ MORE

Is it safe for a woman with cancer to take an emergency contraceptive pill?
Contraceptive pills containing estrogen are controversial. Most breast cancers are estrogen and/or progesterone receptor positive. It is therefore prudent to avoid estrogen in any form. READ MORE

Is there a chance of eye damage during radiation therapy for nose cancer?
It is difficult to say without looking at your uncles' plan of treatment. If the vital structures were well shielded from the high dose radiation, little or no damage can occur from radiation. Chemotherapy may also cause some changes in the oral cavity and vision, etc. Every case is different and every treatment is different. Please talk to your doctor. READ MORE
What are the symptoms of mouth cancer?
Chewing tobacco or smoking can cause head and neck cancers among other things. Symptoms depend on the type of mouth cancers. Chewing tobacco may cause buccal cavity cancers. Look for bleeding, enlarging mass, paresthesia, redness around the lesion, leukoplakia, lymph node enlargement in the neck, etc. READ MORE
What are the ways to counter the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy?
Evaluation by a dietitian. A good diet and appropriate medication to prevent and treat the symptoms may help. READ MORE
Does operating on the lymph node prevent spread of the cancer?
No. If you have lymph gland cancer, a biopsy is essential to make the diagnosis. Removal of the lymph node is sometimes necessary, but it does not prevent the spread of cancer. If the nodes are non-cancerous, find the cause of their enlargement and treat the cause. READ MORE
Is a whole body PET scan essential for diagnosing the spread of tongue cancer?
A CAT scan of the head and neck is the standard of care. However, a PET scan is helpful in finding out if you have a second malignancy in the lungs and elsewhere in the body. READ MORE
What is the chance of survival in stage 4 lung cancer?
It depends on the type of lung cancer and the attitude of the patient. If it is truly a stage 4 non small cell lung cancer, the survival is poor, despite the treatment. However, now we have immunotherapy, which definitely may help some patients turn the corner and give them a chance of long-term survival. A positive attitude helps a great deal. READ MORE
Can a pneumonia cause lung cancer?
No, is the short answer. There could have been a small tumor in the lung which perhaps blocked off the airway passage and caused pneumonia down the track. If the tumor is small, it cannot be visualized on imaging studies. It was probably picked up as it got larger over time. READ MORE
How can I prevent eye damage during radiation therapy for treating nose cancer?
Your radiation doctor will know how to shield the normal vital structures. Make sure you are going to a center that has the IMRT/IGRT machine to provide conformal and targeted therapy. READ MORE

Using radiation with prostate cancer
Permanent seed therapy is either with Iodine or Palladium seed implanted into the prostate. Once introduced, they cannot be removed manually. Seed therapy is one form of radiation therapy for early stage disease. Most people use external beam and seed therapy together. High dose therapy is one strong iridium seed soldered to a wire and introduced into the prostate. In my view, the planning is better. However, both are invasive procedures. Today, we use non-invasive external beam radiation shaped precisely to envelop the prostate and surrounding tissue. READ MORE
How long does it take for nausea from radiation to go away?
