Get to know Radiation Oncologist Dr. Roland B. Hawkins, who serves patients in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Dr. Hawkins is a New Orleans-based physician who specializes in radiation oncology. He treats patients at Ochsner Medical Center.

As a 767-bed acute care hospital, Ochsner Medical Center offers the opportunity to learn and provide patient care at a Magnet recognized facility with three Centers of Excellence, all the while gaining exposure to complex medical cases. This campus is also one of six training sites in the world for robotic surgery and is nationally known for many skilled physicians.

In regards to his educational background, Dr. Hawkins received his medical degree and Doctor of Philosophy degree (PhD) from Washington University. He then went on to complete his internship and residency in radiation oncology at Washington University - Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 1981 and 1987, respectively.

A member of the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology, the doctor attained board certification in radiation oncology through the American Board of Radiology (ABR). The mission of the ABR is to serve patients, the public, and the medical profession by certifying that its diplomats have acquired, demonstrated, and maintained a requisite standard of knowledge, skill, and understanding essential to the safe and competent practice of diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, and medical physics.

Holding a license to practice medicine in Louisiana, Dr. Hawkins is affiliated with Children’s Hospital, Our Lady of the Angels Hospital, and Tulane Health System.

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves the controlled use of radiation to treat cancer. It is one of the three primary specialties – the other two being surgical and medical oncology – involved in the treatment of cancer. A radiation oncologist is a specialist physician who uses ionizing radiation in the treatment of cancer.

On a more personal note, Dr. Hawkins attributes his success to hard work. In his free time, he enjoys golfing.
