Paul G. Byers, DDS, MS, is a well-versed and comprehensive dentist with more than 25 years of extensive experience in his specialty. He maintains a private practice, Apple Valley Dental Group, located in Front Royal, Virginia, in partnership with Harry M. Sartelle III, DDS. Attributing his success to caring for patients and doing missionary work, Dr. Byers treats patients with the safest and most effective dental techniques available. Unknown problem with jaw?
It's not uncommon to leave a root-tip if the complications "could be worse," but this is a very real possibility. I suggest that you get an appointment with an oral surgeon. The ER can't do anything for you. See your general dentist and get a a referral to see an oral surgeon. READ MORE
Is cold water bad for teeth?
Just cold water? NO. However, if you are experiencing pain at your age, there is probably something else going on. I recommend seeing your dentist to find out why. READ MORE
What can I eat after my first dental implant surgery?
After dental implants, you should avoid eating anything crunchy or that requires a lot of chewing or spicy, especially in the area of the implant. Cool nutritious food. The dentist placing the implants will have post-op instructions with food recommendations for you. READ MORE
Do dental implants get plaque?
Absolutely, YES! Plaque is bacteria. You can't eliminate the bacteria in your mouth, so it's going to collect on anything in the mouth. Implants require just as much maintenance as teeth. You can get peri-implantitis and lose an implant due to gum disease. READ MORE
Can I eat chocolate after a tooth extraction?
I wouldn't recommend it. It's probably going to require too much chewing. READ MORE
Should new dentures be loose?
No. Upper dentures should not be. Lower dentures might be depending on what the bone is like. READ MORE
Are zirconia crowns safe?
Yes. But they require a lot more tooth structure to be removed, and in my opinion, they are not very aesthetic. They are much harder to work with if you have to work on the tooth again. Therefore, they are not my first choice. I prefer the tried-and-true porcelain fused to metal or PFM crown. READ MORE
Do braces stain your teeth?
Do braces stain your teeth? In a word, "NO." The braces do not stain your teeth. HOWEVER, it is more difficult to keep your teeth clean while you have the appliances on your teeth. THEREFORE, you MUST be diligent about your home care. You need to take the necessary time to keep the brackets clean. There are more places for bacteria to grow. The bacteria produce acid which can etch the teeth and produce white spots (calcification) which will never go away. Likewise, if you are drinking a lot of soda or eating a lot of things that normally stain your teeth, then these stains will be incorporated into the teeth... So, do braces cause stains? NO.... It is your lack of attention to detail that allows it to happen. READ MORE
How do you relieve severe tooth pain?
See a dentist immediately. There are a lot of things that can be causing it: 1) Infection 2) Cracked tooth 3) Decay 4) Sinus issues 5) Bite is off A dentist can diagnose the causes and make treatment recommendations to suit your desires and your budget. Finally, if you have difficulty swallowing or breathing, go to the emergency room immediately. A compromised airway is life-threatening. READ MORE
Is it normal for a tooth to hurt after a filling?
YES, that is not uncommon. There are several factors for that: 1) Depends on how deep the cavity was. 2) What material was used to restore the tooth. 3) The bite might be off a little. Since the tooth was "traumatized," i.e., worked on, the nerve is going to be a little irritated, so it is perfectly normal for it to be a little sensitive to temperature, especially cold. This should gradually get better and resolve within a month or two. If the tooth is tender to biting as well, the bite is probably off a little and ought to be address (adjusted). How often must I replace my teeth crowns?
The hope is that it will last 20+ years... If you take care of it, brush, floss, routine visits, and watch your diet, there is no reason it should not last at least that long. If you get a porcelain crown, it is subject to chipping and fracture. If you get a gold crown on a back tooth where nobody will see it, it could last a lifetime. READ MORE

Bleeding gums and/or bad breath. Consider routine visits (normally every 6 months) with your dental team (dentist and hygienist). READ MORE
What does bone loss in the teeth mean?
It's a downward spiral. Meticulous oral hygiene is imperative. Poor oral health increases the risk of uncontrolled diabetes because of the infection the body is fighting... Healthy gums allow the body to concentrate on the diabetes... it's a vicious cycle. READ MORE
Is higher or lower pressure better with water flossers?
Lower is better. Ask your hygienist to go over proper techniques. Misused can cause more damage than good. READ MORE

Could wisdom tooth extraction cause an infection?
This is probably NOT an infection, but a dry socket... the clot is lost, the bone is exposed, and it hurts like the devil... it's also possible that debris has gotten into the extraction site and is irritating the sound site. If nothing is done, you can expect it to resolve in 10 to 14 days... but I recommend a visit to the dentist to assess the situation and help you get relief from the pain. READ MORE
I have severe pain in my deep cavity filling. What could this be?
This could be from several causes, the most likely being that the deep filling was close to the nerve. Also, it could be that the filling is slightly high. I would return for a follow-up appointment to assess the reason: a high filling, something caught under the gums, or a near exposure of the nerve. READ MORE
Why does my breath stink?
Bad breath can be due to increased bacteria in the mouth, or issues with the stomach. Additionally, it could be influenced by diet. Excessive consumption of onion, garlic, curry, or other spices can contribute to bad breath. A visit to your dentist is recommended to address your particular case. READ MORE
Can a gum infection pass to other parts of the body?
That is an excellent question. There are many strains of bacteria that live in the mouth. The question is really one of balance. In a healthy mouth, the bacterial counts are low. The gum are healthy because the body's natural immune system is able to keep thing in check. When gum disease sets in, the bacteria begin to get out of balance. The immune system kicks in to do what it's "programmed" to do, i.e. dilate capillaries to deliver more blood and white blood cells to the area yo fight the infection. At this point, the bacteria can get into the blood stream and colonize elsewhere in the body, e.g. leaky or weak heart valves, prosthetic joints, etc. Routine dental vists, cleanings, and meticulous homecare can help to prevent this from becoming an issue.
