Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Kenneth Zaslav, who serves patients in Richmond, Virginia.

Internationally known for his expertise in sports medicine and cartilage restoration, Dr. Zaslav is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in knee and shoulder conditions at OrthoVirginia in Richmond, Virginia.

With more than 100 orthopaedic specialists in 26 locations in Lynchburg, Northern Virginia, Richmond, and Virginia Beach, OrthoVirginia is the state’s largest provider of orthopaedic medicine and therapy. It delivers patient-centered, outcome-focused care, powered by the latest research, innovation, and a leading team of orthopaedic specialists.

As a young athlete and actor, Dr. Zaslav took notice of how physical function impacted performance. During a career apprenticeship in high school, he spent a week shadowing an orthopaedic surgeon and quickly made the connection between the specialty and his own observations about movement.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in biology, he attended medical school at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. He gravitated toward orthopaedics as a field that not only improved functional performance, but also allowed him to use his intellectual curiosity and think creatively about problems. He completed his residency at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and also did an internship in general surgery before completing two intensive fellowship programs in sports medicine and shoulder specialties.

A frequent international lecturer on orthopaedic topics, Dr. Zaslav serves as a Clinical Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University.

In his ongoing practice, he has developed research and expertise in cartilage repair and joint preservation. He is deeply involved with the International Cartilage Repair and Joint Preservation Society (ICRS), of which he is a past President. The ICRS is a worldwide organization of scientists and surgeons committed to improving the lives of osteoarthritis patients through advanced treatments and innovative care.

With an unwavering commitment to his specialty, the doctor is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

Among his professional affiliations, he is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Fellow), the International Cartilage Repair Society, the American Association of Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the Medical Society of Virginia, the American Medical Association, the Richmond Orthopaedic Club, and the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Voted Castle Connelly Top Doctor and Richmond Magazine Top Doctor, Dr. Zaslav is currently the Chief Team Physician for the Richmond Ballet and Richmond Rhythm. He also serves as the Secretary General for The Biologics Association.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Zaslav has prioritized clinical research and teaching other orthopaedic surgeons around the world about the latest technologies, treatments, and therapies. He has been a visiting professor in medical schools in China, Chile, Mexico, and Venezuela.

On a more personal note, he enjoys music, film, and cycling. He performs regularly as a guitar player and serves on the Board of the Richmond Ballet and Richmond Metropolitan Sports Backers.

Along with his wife, psychologist Erica Mindes, Dr. Zaslav has two grown children and a golden retriever. After moving to Richmond in 1990, he and Dr. Mindes raised their family in Richmond, and are proud to claim the area as their home.
