  • Can dentures cause jaw pain?

Yes. If the teeth are not balanced and pressures equally distributed on the left, right and front portions of the denture it can cause chronic strain on the TMJ joint capsules on each side. Also, it can cause muscle spasms and tenderness on the gums in addition to loosening of the suction/retention of the denture. You may want to find a doctor like myself that can adjust the denture teeth to make sure pressures are equally distributed. *Bishop Family Dental* Phone: 801-839-9968 READ MORE

  • Is it painful to have a root canal?

It is not painful if the Doctor gets the area fully numb. All you should feel is vibrations and pressure. *Bishop Family Dental* Phone: 801-274-2500 READ MORE

  • What treatment is best for swollen gums?

It depends on what is causing the swelling. If it is an infection then an antibiotic regimen is needed, and treatment of the infected tooth or section of gums is the long term solution. If they are swollen due to lack of thorough cleaning and or periodontal disease then a deep cleaning with possible laser treatment and a prescription mouth rinse of Peridex along with brushing, flossing and waterpik set at 4 and gradually increased to 7 or 8 over the two week period. If the issue is fungal in nature then an antifungal prescription is required. You will need to visit a Doctor like myself to determine the root cause of the swelling and once an accurate diagnosis is made then treatment and necessary medications can be started. Till then Warm salt water rinses may help in certain areas, however don't delay a visit to the dentist as some mouth swelling can be related to life threatening situations if left untreated. *Bishop Family Dental* Phone: 801-274-2500 READ MORE

  • X-ray shows dark area at root tip advised to have a root canal, but have never had any symptoms should I wait

Many diseases are chronic or silent and don't always show symptoms. A tooth that has a shadow/dark area at the root tip is the result of an infection. If the infection has an escape route so it doesn't build up pressure you probably won't feel anything. If the path that depressurizes the infection in the bone gets clogged though you can wake up unexpectedly with a swollen face, and a great deal of pain that requires an emergency visit to the ER. It's best to address health problems when they are first discovered and before they become symptomatic if possible. READ MORE

  • When can I brush my teeth after laser gum surgery?

You can brush your teeth. Just avoid the areas around the gums where the surgery took place. -Dr Bishop *Bishop Family Dental* Phone: 801-274-2500 READ MORE

  • Are tooth implants painful?

Placing an implant is a surgery, and it can be expected that there will be a healing process. This said, because the implant process is to make a precise space in the gums/bone that the implant fully fills the healing time and pain is minimal. The only time the procedure can have moderate to severe poin is if there are any underlying health problems or issues with the implant or site that causes it to start to fail. If this is the case then you may have to have the implant removed and fix the underlying condition and try again. READ MORE

  • How long is your mouth sore after getting dental implants?

Normally just the first few days. It's a lot less sore and painful than an extraction because you immediately fill the hole in the socket of the bone where the roots would normally be. If an implant is struggling and or failing it can be painful right away without improvement day to day. The implant should be checked if it is not getting better every day. READ MORE

  • Should I be concerned about root canal pain?

It depends on the tooth. Certain teeth like upper 1st molars sometimes have extra canals that can be missed. You can find out if they treated 3 or 4 canals. If the doctor has a conebeam imaging system they can take a 3D picture of it and see if anything got missed. You may also be hitting a temporary crown of filling too hard which will make the tooth hurt even after Root Canal Therapy is performed. There's also the possibility that the tooth may have a fracture in a root in which case Root Canal Therapy will not work. If it doesn't seem to be getting better I would have the Dentist/Endodontist take a look at it. READ MORE

  • How should partial dentures feel?

Partial dentures should feel stable if they have teeth in the back and front to hold on to. They will also feel like a large oral appliance and will take some time to get used to. They are a prosthesis that you wear in your mouth to replace the teeth, bone and gums that you have lost. They are a good replacement for missing teeth. There are also other replacement options that are better such as fixed bridges and implants. Both of these options do not need to be removed and do not need to take up any more space than the teeth that you would normally feel. The Implant option is the best because it will secure the bone where the roots of the teeth used to be and so you don't lose any additional skull bone. They are also a better long-term solution in case you lose all the teeth to use as afoundation for a full denture. READ MORE

  • Do you get anesthesia when getting braces?

I haven't ever seen anyone receive anesthesia to get braces, so you most likely will not need any anesthesia. *Bishop Family Dental* Phone: 801-274-2500 READ MORE

  • Do I need a dental crown or filling?

It depends on how structurally compromised the tooth is from the decay and any missing parts of the tooth or areas that have already been replaced with previous fillings. If more than half of the tooth is missing, decayed, broken on has crack lines running through it it should receive a crown. If the cavity has reached the nerve and the tooth requires Root Canal Therapy it will need a crown as well to structurally reinforce the tooth so the remaining tooth structure doesn't shatter. -Dr. Bishop *Bishop Family Dental* Phone: 801-274-2500 READ MORE

  • What is the fix for loose dentures?

It depends on whether they are partial dentures will metal clasps that can be adjusted to hold on to the teeth tighter or if they are complete dentures that need a Lab to reline to have a better more stable denture. A dentist can evaluate it and see what he can do to make them fit better. READ MORE

  • Deep filling?

Those are great questions. Deep cavities can come close to the nerve. Teeth have pores so sometimes even when there is not an obvious hole or bleeding coming from the nerve an infection can occur. This is because bacteria are microscopic and can swim through the pores and sometimes get into the nerve when a cavity gets close enough to the nerve. Also, sometimes teeth don't need Root Canal Therapy after a deep filling and they are only sensitive because of the surgery and need time to heal. These teeth progressively get better over time. If a tooth is becoming more painful over time, it is one of two things: One, it has an infection, or two, the filling/crown is too high and getting hit sooner than the other teeth. This last one is a common occurrence because as patients are numb they don't know how to bring their teeth together in the correct way all the time. This makes it so that sometimes the fillings/crowns are shaped incorrectly and a simple adjustment is needed. If you close your teeth slowly together and find that any teeth including the one that is hurting get touched first it could be traumatized by all the extra pressure it is handling and a simple adjustment may fix the problem and avoid the need for a Root Canal. In answer to your other question, Root Canal Therapy and removing the nerve are the same. Inside every tooth's roots are tiny nerves and blood vessels that can get infected. If they get infected you can preserve the tooth by removing the infected tissue and placing special fillings to seal up the tooth and keep infection out. Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • Does coconut oil really fix cavities?

Coconut oil may pull some impurities out of the mouth and may kill bacteria and reduce the risk of cavities forming. Coconut oil will not reverse existing cavities though as a cavity is due to the loss of minerals due to acid leaching of minerals from the teeth. Coconut oil will not put more minerals back in the tooth. Also, reversing cavities can only be done with minerals until the cavity breaks through the outer shell of enamel, at which time the foundation for the enamel in that spot is too weak and the enamel cavitates in. This can only be repaired with fillings at that point. Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • Canker sore or wisdom teeth?

The canker sore could be due to the acidic lemon juice. Make sure you rinse your mouth after any soda or acidic drink with water. Also, CVS and Walgreens have canker bandages in the dental aisle which is a clear gel patch in a circle shape that you can put over the canker while it heals to make it feel better. Also, your wisdom teeth may be trying to come in at your age and putting pressure on the other teeth and gums and causing their own type of pain. You can get those evaluated, too. Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • Why do I have a random gap all the sudden in my teeth?

Either the gap has been formed by the loss of a filling you previously had placed in the tooth or your teeth are moving or spaces are developing as your jaw changes shape as you get older. You can visit a dentist or orthodontist to evaluate spacing and crowding issues with your teeth. Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • Why do my dentures smell so quickly?

It could be that there is an overgrowth of the bacteria/fungus in your mouth. I would recommend in addition to cleaning the dentures each day that you also swish around with a glass of water and 3 drops of H2O Orega, which is a combination of water soluble essential oils that have been shown to kill bacteria, fungus, etc. Also, bacteria can hide in the papilla (taste buds) of your tongue so going over the tongue multiple times in the morning and night with a good tongue scraper like Breath RX can help. • Waiting on root canal after deep filling?

Those are great questions. Based on your symptoms and the tooth’s history you definitely have an infection and need an antibiotic. Xrays don’t show early infections as there has to be enough bone destruction from the infection to show up. Hopefully you can find a specialist that can see you sooner. I’d be happy to look at it as well if you are near Utah. READ MORE

  • How long does it take for oil pulling to heal gums?

If it's an effective treatment, you should notice a significant difference within a week. Oregano essential oil, especially H2O Orega, which is a soluble form; you can put a few drops in your waterpik to irrigate your gums and in between your teeth, which is an effective form of healing the gums. If that doesn't work, you may have an infection or other issue and should be seen by a dentist. Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • How long should I be swollen after dental implant surgery?

It's normal to have some discomfort for a couple of days following an implant surgery. If there was a bone graft or sinus lift procedure also performed it may take 1 to 2 weeks to start feeling better. If there is any pus, abscess, etc., the implant could be failing and you should have the doctor look at it to see if it is having any problems. Dr. Bishop READ MORE
