  • How do they fix tooth erosion at the gum line?

Tooth erosion at the gum line can be caused by acid testing too long along the gum/tooth junction. This can come from any acidic or sweetened drink and from acid reflux. Things that cause gum recession can also cause the roots to be exposed making them more prone to erosion. This can be things such as breathing through your mouth at night, imbalances in the distribution of forces on the teeth/ligaments, grinding and clenching. So in answer to your question a change in diet, adjustments in sleep/sleep appliances/night guards, occlusal adjustments, regular cleanings and good home care can all help halt the progress of the acid erosion. A periodontist can place gum grafts to cover the acid erosion and a dentist can place fillings to repair the lost enamel. READ MORE

  • Can food get under a crown?

Food can get under a crown if it has a cavity or is not sealed correctly with its shape and cement. READ MORE

  • How do you tell if a tooth crown is not fitted properly?

It may be difficult to know for sure without an X-ray and exam with an explorer, but if you see any gaps between the root and the crown, can feel your floss hit a ledge or go under the crown. If you’re constantly pulling a lot of food out around it or your floss has no resistance when flossing around it. Also, if you hit it with your other teeth first before the others, it is not balanced or may not be seated correctly. READ MORE

  • What can dentists do for enamel loss?

There are a lot of options available. The first options are to take measures to prevent the loss of enamel through mineral treatments and other therapies to strengthen the enamel, reverse incipient lesions that will turn into cavities and balance the teeth so that they are all sharing an equal load and functioning in ways that won't crack or break the enamel off. In cases where the enamel is broken off, we can repair those areas with composite filling material or porcelain. Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • How does a dentist remove a tooth broken at the gum line?

Special instruments are used to separate the ligaments from the tooth in the socket, loosen and remove the tooth. A good dentist will take care to not remove any bone around the tooth unless absolutely necessary. -Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • Dry socket?

I’m sorry to hear that you have a dry socket. It can be a longer more painful experience but luckily even dry sockets will still heal. The best things you can do once you have a dry socket is to have a dentist place a dressing in the wound and try to reduce or eliminate smoking to promote healing. -Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • Is a tooth infection an emergency?

It can become an emergency if it is left untreated. An infection in a lower tooth can spread between muscles under the tongue and cause swelling that can close off the airway. An infection in an upper tooth can spread into the sinuses and left untreated to the brain. Both of these are rare because most people treat infections before they get to this state due to the pain they usually cause. You should get prescribed antibiotics and have the tooth treated as soon as you’re able. -Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • Should I brush a broken tooth?

Yes. You should brush a broken tooth if it is going to be a while before you get it fixed. Broken teeth usually have lost the enamel and a portion of the core of the tooth. If a cavity sets in it can spread quickly through the remaining softer core of the tooth and cause an infection. Definitely fix the broken tooth as soon as you can to prevent this as well as further breakage and potential loss of the tooth. -Dr. Bishop READ MORE

  • Can Invisalign damage teeth?

Invisalign shouldn’t cause teeth to be damaged. It simply puts pressure on the teeth like wire braces to move them. You should be at a lower risk for cavities since you can take them off and clean your teeth properly, and you don’t have a restricted diet like you do with wire braces. READ MORE

  • Can your toothbrush be used to clean Invisalign?

Yes, your toothbrush can cut your gums if you brush too hard or have a coarse/hard bristled toothbrush. You should always brush with two fingers worth of pressure. Think of it more like sweeping rather than scrubbing a stain off. Invest in a sonicare toothbrush and water pik in addition to flossing and you will have much healthier gums and teeth and minimize the damage done to them. READ MORE

  • Do dentures lead to receding gums?

Imbalances in the way partial dentures attach to and use existing teeth for support can cause receding gums around the existing teeth. Complete denture do not cause loss of gums and bone. The loss of gums and bone with complete dentures is a result of losing the teeth roots that anchored and supported the gums and bone before they were lost. READ MORE

  • How often can I use a mouthwash in a day?

You can use mouth wash up to three times a day. You most likely should invest in Breath RX tongue spray and a Breath RX Tongue scrapper and use the coarse side. Buy yourself a sonicare toothbrush and a waterpik and get a deep cleaning of your teeth and fix any infections and cavities that may be contributing to your breath. Also, get a prescription for Peridex mouth wash (kills bacteria around the teeth, gums and tongue) and use it daily for only two weeks every few months (it stains the teeth if used more often than that). Also be tested for H. Pylori. READ MORE

  • Broken molar with decay. What should I do?

You need to have it evaluated by a dentist. It could have an infection in it that needs to be cleaned up before an abcess occurs. Also the tooth itself may break further to the point of irreparable damage if it is ignored. READ MORE

  • Can eating ice harm my teeth?

Yes. Even though it is frozen water and it seems like it should be harmless it can break the teeth apart and you should try to replace that habit with something less destructive. READ MORE

  • What causes erosion of teeth?

Any food or drink that is allowed to rest on the teeth other than non-acidic water can cause erosion of the teeth. Loss of tooth structure can be caused by many things including, imbalanced bite, misaligned teeth, acid attack, GERD, Bulimia, diet, lack of proper care and cleaning of teeth. Water pH 6 or lower, lemon water, soda pops, juice, milk, stomach acid, etc. are some of the liquids that can cause erosion READ MORE

  • Will being on a liquid diet affect my teeth in any way?

Only if the sugars or acids are allowed to rest on the gums or teeth. You should always rinse with water after drinking anything but water. The sugars/acidity of most other drinks can rest in the groves on the tops of the teeth, in between the teeth, and along the gum line creating cavities over time. READ MORE

  • My son grinds his teeth. What can you do to help him?

Have him tested for sleep apnea. He may not be getting enough oxygen while he is sleeping at night and the body will move the jaw forward to open the airway irrespective of his teeth and it can cause the teeth to be ground down. Also he can get a night guard made for him to wear at night to protect his teeth. A full occlusal adjustment can balance his bite and make his jaw relax and not feel the need to grind or clench. Muscle relaxant medications may also be helpful depending on what is causing the issue. READ MORE

  • How can I tell if I'm grinding my teeth?

You could be grinding or clenching your teeth at night. The muscles, jaw joints, and teeth can all be effected by this process and wear facets, abfractions, craze lines, chips, missing enamel, gum recession, maxillary or mandibular tori can all be signs that you are clenching or grinding your teeth at night. READ MORE

  • My child accidentally ate toothpaste. What should I do?

Fluoride is helpful in the right dosage and similar to vitamins can be dangerous at higher doses. It depends on how much she ate. I would only be concerned if she purposely ate half a tube of toothpaste or more in one setting. If a little of the normal toothpaste amount on a toothbrush at a time is swallowed she should be fine. READ MORE

  • Can my silver fillings be replaced with white fillings?

Yes. I remove silver/mercury fillings all the time and replace them with white fillings. I have found that those metal filling almost always have leaked because they do not bond to the teeth. The mercury has also been shown to escape in the form of mercury vapor every time a person eats on them. The metals corrode and also seem to infiltrate the pores of the teeth and stain them.
