  • Are whitening toothpastes bad for the teeth?

Hello and thank you for submitting your question, Whitening toothpaste does not protect the teeth and they can appear to whiten teeth slightly by removing surface stains, such as those caused by drinking coffee or smoking. However, whitening toothpastes can't change the natural color of your teeth or lighten a stain that goes deeper than a tooth's surface. For a toothpaste be able to protect the teeth needs to have fluoride, when you use a fluoride toothpaste, you are strengthening your tooth enamel and this prevents tooth decay. So, in my opinion, whitening toothpaste does not protect the teeth. READ MORE

  • I don't understand how I got Periodontal disease

Good afternoom and thank you for your qestion. Periodontal disease, I would say have a complex pathogenesis, and a lot factors contribuiting to its etiology, like a myriad of microorganisms. Since 1930 exist the theory that host genetic make-up may act in combination with environmental factors to influence periodontal disease and since 1930, it was concluded that susceptibility and immunity to periodontal disease were "probably inherited. Think in this fact: Not all people who smoke develop cancer. And yet, tobacco smoke contains over 4,700 chemical compounds, over 40 of which are acknowledged carcinogens. So, the list of acknowledged and proven periodontal risk factors is relatively short and well-understood: smoking, stress, compromised immune system, and poor oral hygiene. Clinical and laboratory research over the past decade, including family-group studies, the human-twin paradigm, and in-vitro evaluation of human cellular responses to bacteria, have confirmed that there is a strong genetic component of susceptibility to periodontitis and periodontal destruction. This permits adding a fifth risk factor to the list: genetic susceptibility due to the IL-1 genotype. So, exist a genetic predisposition to Periodontal disease. I hope this answer your qestion. • What if only one tooth is crooked?

Good evening and thank you for your question. The first step for answering this question is assess all your teeth and determine if your occlusion is functional. What does this mean? A functional occlusion allows the whole system be working in harmony and this can be functional with one or more teeth crooked. So, in my opinion you will need braces if your occlusion (the way your upper and lower teeth touch each other when you bite down) is non-functional. READ MORE

  • Wisdom teeth removal

Good morning and thank you so much for your question. That depends on the degree of expertise in the field of wisdom teeth surgery of the general dentist that do the initial consultation. Some General Dentists send to the Oral Surgeon all wisdom teeth, some GD just do the wisdom teeth when these are fully erupted, and some GD are able to pull out all wisdom teeth that they receive in their offices. The answer is that this depends of the General Dentist's criterion when they do the initial assessment of the patient. READ MORE

  • Can I whiten my teeth with baking soda alone?

It is OK to use baking soda for brushing your teeth. One important thing about the baking soda is the abrasivity. The hardness of the tooth enamel is a 5 and Baking soda’s hardness rating is 2.5. So, baking soda used consciously isn’t too abrasive. Beside that Baking soda has some benefits: 1. Supports a healthier oral pH. 2. Baking soda lowers bad bacterias count. 3. Helps to gently remove extrinsic stains from teeth. Xylitol can be combined with Baking soda to boost remineralization. Just make sure that the xylitol is sourced from birch and not corn, you so avoid GMO exposure. READ MORE

  • Bloody painful gums, what should I do?

Thank you so much for sending your question. The first thing you need to do is to visit your dentist. There are a lot of diseases that target the gums. The main cause of bleeding gums is the buildup of plaque at the gum line, causing gingivitis.  If you are under high levels of stress, this can affect your oral health also. Stress increases inflammation in your body, which makes your gums more likely to bleed. High stress levels also reduce your immune system's functionality, making it more difficult for your body to fight infection and to heal. To keep your gums healthy, brush your teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals.  Floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque.  Control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress. But the first step is to make an appointment with your dentist. Dr Suarez-Zayas READ MORE

Wow, really disappointed with Dr. Suarez. Been seeing him for 2 months to get partials made. Haven't really had clear idea of whats involved with this process, but because I thought my partials were ready I came in this morning really looking forward to leaving with a great smile. I was informed that it was for a wax impression after I arrived and wasn't real happy that it was for more impressions which I've done twice already. I wasn't told to bring in my temporary partial so he couldn't do anything. He told me to go elsewhere to get them made. What a bad atttitude from someone who appeared so nice! I'm still baffled as to what happened. He is not the man I thought he was. Be VERY careful about using this Doctor! Staff was wonderful all of my trips there.
