Stress affects every part of us - physical, mental, emotional and even spiritual. It's important to start by understanding what the stress is stemming from: Are you afraid of failing and are thus saying "yes" to every project or task? Or are you working like a dog to earn a promotion? Or something else? There's no one way to address stress, but good approaches include setting healthy work boundaries, making sure your priorities are in order, and practicing good self care. READ MORE
It is entirely up to you. As a therapist I always ask my client if religion/spirituality is important to them and if they want it included in their treatment. This means that I will honor their religion or spirituality focus as a method of their treatment. You should definitely mention this area if it is something you want to be included, or something you want to work on. READ MORE
There are many different treatments for depression, and many different theraputic approaches to treatment. Psychoanalysis is merely one theraputic approach. It is not as common today as it was during the early years of counseling/therapy. There are many more theories and approaches that have better evidence of being helpful in treating depression, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. But the most important aspect of treatment is your willingness to improve/change, and also the strength of your relationship with your therapist. Find a good therapist and you'll start seeing improvements, no matter what theraputic interventions they use. READ MORE
100%. Don't wait till it's too late. Marriage counseling isn't a "last ditch" effort one step before divorce. Marriage counseling is for those who are ready to put everything that they are comfortable with on the line to make their marriage the most important thing in their lives. It works. But it will require everything from both of you, and it will be 100% worth it. READ MORE
If you took him to a doctor first they would most likely recommend and refer him out for counseling anyway. Counseling is the best approach to treat this multifaceted issue. Its never good to say what "normal" is, because there's no such thing. But getting some help for it will definitely help him feel better if he is comfortable with his therapist. READ MORE
If the amount of sex is a problem for either of you, then sure, bringing it up would be a good idea. But, before I attach a label such as "addicted to sex," there would be a lot more information I would need first. Maybe have a conversation with her about your concerns and see what she says first. If it's an issue for you, then maybe you could talk to a therapist first and see if she is willing to join you. READ MORE
Validate his emotions. Encourage his best traits. Show him all the ways he's amazing that have nothing to do with his appearance. The movie Wonder is really encouraging. And the book The Whole Brain child could be helpful for you too! READ MORE
This could certainly be something you bring up in therapy. As a holistic therapist I would want to know what your diet and sleep routine looks like first. We often don't realize how many things affect our brains during sleep, such as what we ate for dinner or what we watched on TV last week or even our level of hydration during sleep. READ MORE
My daughter has been bullied in school, and now she isolates herself at home. What can I do for her?
Find a good child therapist who can help her build her self esteem and process those traumatic experiences of bullying. Validate her emotions. Find her some good friends. Celebrate her. Watch the movie Wonder with her. READ MORE
I don't turn to medication as a first step for kids. Always start with therapy. Her depression came from somewhere. A good therapist will help uncover that and treat the root of it instead of medicating a symptom first. READ MORE
This is a heavy and loaded question, and one that will require many different things at once. First, you need a safe outlet to process this traumatic experience. Then, you need some positive interactions with him. And ultimately you need marriage counseling together to rebuild your bond. Many marriages recover from things like this. But its very hard to do alone. Listen to some great podcasts like Only You Forver that discuss this issue. And ultimately, find a therapist you can unload this baggage with and do the good work of recovering from it. READ MORE
