Dr. Gregory P. Brown M.D.'s Expert Contributions
  • Do depression medicines hamper sleep patterns?

Many, but not all, antidepressants will affect sleep architecture. What that means is that it can affect the brainwave patterns throughout the night to create a less than ideal sleep pattern. Talk to your prescribing doctor the possibility of changing to an antidepressant less likely to affect sleep cycle if you're not feeling rested. READ MORE

  • Can high TSH levels cause depression?

Elevated TSH levels may suggest hypothyroidism which can cause symptoms of depression in many individuals. Treatment for the thyroid condition is very important because this particular endocrine system affects many different parts of the body. READ MORE

  • Is stress a medical condition or an emotional term?

Stress is anything that affects functioning: it may be emotional in cause or physical or a combination of both [such as pain]. The effects of long term stress do include physical changes in the body such as elevated stress hormones, such as cortisol. Even purely psychological stressors can lead to physical changes if they persist. READ MORE

  • Is excessive sleeping a side effect of anti depressants?

Some antidepressants have side effects which would increase sleepiness, some do the opposite. It depends on the medication and the dose. Speak to her prescriber as soon as possible and let the prescriber know about this potential side effect. READ MORE

  • I am taking medication for my OCD, but I don’t feel very good. What should I do?

Discuss these potential side effects with your prescriber to find out if there are other alternatives, or if they are expected to be time limited. READ MORE

  • I'm having some severe chest pain with anxiety. Is this dangerous? What could it be?

Any severe and sharp chest pain requires an evaluation in the nearest ER. Also, consult with your primary care provider to arrange a consultation with a cardiologist for you to make absolutely sure that there is no related heart condition before fully attributing any of the pain to your anxiety. Your doctors can then help you assess the cause more effectively. READ MORE

  • At night, thinking prevents me from sleeping. Can I do anything about it?

Why such things happen are really unique to the person suffering. Distraction techniques like leaving on the TV while you start to fall asleep helps some people. Others can divert the ruminative thinking with a mental task such as counting until that becomes boring enough to fall asleep. You can also consider asking your provider to request a formal sleep study to make sure there is nothing else going on that might affect your sleep cycle. If there is a lot of stress, you may wish to consider seeing a therapist to personally help with some coping skills as well. READ MORE

  • Sudden mental fatigue--what can it be?

You may want to consider getting a full medical workup to make sure you don't have any form of medical condition which could affect your energy levels. If all is OK medically, then consider seeing a psychiatrist to get an assessment related to psychiatric conditions which could affect energy levels. READ MORE

  • How important is having friends?

I would refer you to a child psychiatrist to ask this question because child psychiatry falls outside my area of expertise. I wish you and your daughter well. READ MORE

  • Is it safe to drink alcohol while taking Zoloft?

No one is going to say it is absolutely safe to mix alcohol with psychiatric medications of any kind. But Zoloft does not affect the same brain systems that alcohol and some other medications do. So it is likely not absolutely forbidden, at least for some people. That being said, it is the ideal for you to speak directly with your doctor and see what that person's perspective is on the question. He or she may not wish to prescribe a particular medication when a patient is using alcohol, so please do ask your provider directly about this. READ MORE

  • My son has Asperger's Syndrome. How is it treated?

My apologies, but the syndrome falls outside my areas of expertise. I would recommend asking a specialist in child psychiatry. I do you wish you the best of luck. READ MORE

  • Privacy and confidentiality with caregivers

You will need to inform the psychiatrist about the diagnosis, and request the ability to speak with him/her. If the patient can sign a release of information for the doctor to talk to you, that would be ideal. READ MORE
