  • Don't want to have surgery for enlarged heart--any other options?

Very limited information has been provided. If enlarged heart is associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) (blocked heart arteries), then you need coronary bypass surgery. If there is no CAD, then you can be treated with medications. If there is a heart valve problem, then you should follow your cardiologist's advice. READ MORE

  • Will my hip replacement put me at risk for heart disease?

My answer is qualified. If you are young (<40 years), relatively active taking into account hip problem, no chest pain or shortness of breath and have no other risk factors i.e. Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, elevated cholesterol, any history of smoking then your perioperative risk of heart related complications is very low (<5%). Final decision will be by your doctor and surgeon. READ MORE

  • Increasing resting heart rate, what is it?

Elevated resting heart rate usually represents physical deconditioning. It may also be an early sign of nascent heart failure. There is enough data to support that elevated heart rate is deleterious to health long term. It needs further evaluation. Contact you PCP and possibly a cardiologist. A simple stress test may answer most of these concerns. Anwar Ahmad MD, FACC READ MORE
