Her areas of service include nasoalveolar molding for newborns with cleft lip and palate, cleft lip and palate treatment, orthodontics for children and adults, craniofacial orthopedics early intervention program, orofacial myofunctional therapy, sleep disordered breathing (sleep apnea) in adults and children, temporomandibular joint evaluation and treatment, cardiorespiratory coupling screening, and digital intraoral sleep appliance calibration and insertion.

Growing up in Mexico City, Dr. Calkins received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1991. Thereafter, she completed advanced training in orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics at Howard University in Washington D.C. 

Her international background and training allows her to implement techniques used around the world in the management of orthopedics, myofunctional therapy and orthodontics. She has been trained by the best minds of the profession and care systems. Usually, acquiring knowledge from the doctors who invented a technique, diagnosis or treatment modalities directly. 

Attributing her success to her training and continued education, Dr. Calkins is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO). The ABO is 

Every year, Dr. Calkins completes many hours of continuing education. In addition to attending numerous lectures, seminars, and conferences, she participates in the Damon® and Insignia™ Forums, is part of the Spears Study Group and the Northern Virginia Orthodontic Study Club.

With the constant changes in orthodontic and dentofacial orthopedic treatments and technologies, it is essential she remains current. Her patients trust her to provide the highest level of care; continuing education ensures she exceeds their expectations.

Outside of the office, Dr. Calkins enjoys traveling, honoring God at St. Luke Catholic Church, spending quality time with her family, hiking, kayaking, and playing the violin. She is married with two blessed children.
