About

Dr. Ammaar Abidi received his DDS from the University of Tennessee, College of Dentistry in 2015. He then joined the University of Tennessee, College of Graduate Health Sciences to receive his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2017. Dr. Abidi, has been published in several highly esteemed journals and was recognized by The American Association of Oral Biology for his achievements in research. He has also received numerous prestigious awards at UT College of Dentistry such as the Harold Cloogman Research Award and the James C. Ragain Jr. Research Award. His current research project involves the use of selective cannabinoids as anti-inflammatory agents for the development of novel drugs for periodontal therapy to aid in strategies to improve public oral health. Other research interests and projects include oral squamous cell carcinoma, pain, periodontal disease and other inflammatory conditions affecting the oral cavity.

How long do dental inlays last?
Dental Inlays when done appropriately usually last about the same time as would a dental crown. I would safely say that it should last you a minimum of 5 years and with proper oral hygiene and care it may even last for up to 25 years. READ MORE
Does my son need antibiotics after extraction?
Antibiotics are usually not prescribed for a simple extraction procedure unless infection or tooth necrosis is present. If it is just an over-retained baby tooth without any complications, only post-op instructions for pain management and wound healing will be given. READ MORE
Do toothaches always mean an infection?
Toothaches occur in response to a stimulus, it can be for several reasons but infections are more common. You can have pain (sensitivity) to cold or hot foods which might be due to inflamed gums or exposed root surfaces of the tooth. You can also have something stuck within or around the tooth causing irritation to the area. Many times tooth pain surfaces not due to tooth infection but injury or infection of the surrounding areas such as soft tissues or the periodontium. On certain occasions, the individual can have fractures occurring within the teeth which can also result in pain. Nonetheless, your dentist should hopefully be able to resolve the issue. READ MORE
Do dental sealants need to be reapplied?
Sealants are a preventative coating that reduces the chances of tooth decay. Studies have shown that cavity-prone children have seen a reduction of tooth decay up to 60%. Sealants are not meant to last too long, the purpose they serve is to reduce damage to teeth at most susceptible times. However, some sealants can last for a very long time but those are not very common. Also, after the initial application of sealants, it is up to you and the dentist if it is deemed wise to reapply it as the patient still might be at a risk for tooth decay. READ MORE
Do I have to be numb?
I would not recommend doing a filling without numbing the tooth unless it a very small cavity that is within the enamel surface. In Mid-deep fillings, I would always recommend getting numb as you will feel high sensitivity with air, water, and handpiece (Drilling). READ MORE

Normally, a local anesthetic will be given for a filling. If anything else is required to better accommodate him, that can be discussed between you and the dentist. READ MORE

My dentist told me I need a bridge. What is the process of getting a bridge?
Ask your dentist to illustrate a dental bridge for you. It may be a bit difficult at times to imagine but to put it simply, the tooth in front and behind the missing teeth will be used as the abutment (substructure) of the bridge, while teeth filling the empty space (tooth space) are termed pontics. Can braces cause injury?
Braces are a very common procedure nowadays. Normally there should not be any particular complications with braces. Most people feel at unease after initial placement due to a few reasons such as (something new in their mouth) and (orthodontic wires which initially make you feel like your teeth are glued tight together). Overall, it is a pretty harmless procedure and in normal circumstances, the orthodontist does not need to numb the mouth. READ MORE
My daughter's braces are too tight. Is there anything I can do?
It is not uncommon to initially feel uncomfortable, however, if it has been a few weeks. I would go back to the orthodontist. I believe they need to decrease the tension within the wires. I would recommend that you go back to the dentist (ortho) who placed them for you. READ MORE
How long does one need dental bridges?
Hi, I am not sure if i completely understand your question. However, dental bridges are commonly used to fill in for missing tooth space by preparing the adjacent teeth for crowns and the missing area receives a crown (bridged by the adjacent teeth). Why do I have sensitivity in all my lower teeth?
There are several factors which can cause teeth to become sensitive. The most common reasons are gingivitis (inflammation of the gums), plaque and calculus induced decaying tooth surface, and exposure of the root surface of the teeth. Is a root canal in pregnancy safe?
If it is an emergency, I would recommend you go see a dentist for him/her to evaluate the tooth. Usually, the second trimester is considered the best period for dental treatment. There is certain precaution which is taken by the dentists but for emergency cases, it may be better to proceed with root canal therapy as it reduces the burden of disease (microbial pathogens). For your comfort, I would recommend you go see a dental specialist (endodontist) as they might be able to address your concerns a bit better. In terms of postponing treatment, you will have an open cavity in the mouth for a future bacterial invasion if you do not get it looked at. You can never be certain when you will flare up again with pain as it is your bodies response to invaders (bacteria)that causes pain. READ MORE
