Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Mercedes A. Paine, who serves patients in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Known for her intuitive, empathic, and compassionate nature, Dr. Paine is an established psychiatrist specializing in child, adolescent, and adult psychiatry. She is the Co-Founder & Medical Director of The Center for Integrative Psychiatry & Counseling in Hackensack, New Jersey.

Helping patients overcome life’s challenges, she specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, disruptive behavioral disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, as well as schizophrenia and personality disorders. She works closely with the team at the Center in the diagnosis, management, and supervision of clinical cases. In addition, she provides ongoing consultation services to schools and clinical support to child study teams.

Skilled at recognizing maladaptive patterns of behavior and emotions, Dr. Paine is dedicated to assisting the patient towards a sense of well-being in the therapeutic process. She is strongly influenced by the belief that the mind, body & spirit work best when in concert.

Her approach to patients is characterized by a holistic understanding of biological as well as psychosocial and environmental contributions. She incorporates psychotherapy, pharmacological management, as well as other integrative approaches in treating each patient as a whole person.  

A 1988 graduate of Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in the Dominican Republic, Dr. Paine relocated to the United States in pursuit of her training. She completed her training at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, located at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Department of Psychiatry.

With over three decades of experience in her field, she is board-certified in psychiatry & child and adult psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to promoting high quality patient care for the public through the initial and continuing certification of psychiatrists and neurologists.  

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.
