- Guenther Koehne, MD, PhD, is a hematologist/oncologist and Medical Director of the Cytotherapy Laboratory at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. In addition, he is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine, a position he assumed in 2015. Dr. Koehne received his medical degree in 1992 and his doctor of philosophy degree in 1996 at The Medical University of Hamburg in Germany. His postgraduate training includes his internship at the University Medical Center Hamburg, residency at Rush Medical College, and fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Koehne is board certified in medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and is a professional member of the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and the American Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation. Dr. Koehne is a physician-scientist whose clinical focus is treating patients with hematologic malignancies, and he has particular expertise in allogeneic (donor-derived) hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, myelodysplastic syndrome, and multiple myeloma. At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, they are pioneering a new type of stem cell transplantation in which they remove a specific subset of cells (T cells) from the donor??s stem cells before the transplant, which this significantly reduces the so-called graft-versus-host reactions. As the principle investigator, Dr. Koehne is leading clinical trials to study the effectiveness of T cell-depleted transplants from related and unrelated donors in patients with high-risk multiple myeloma.
