Yusuf Mosuro, MD, is an established anesthesiologist with Humble Surgical Hospital in Houston, Texas. He obtained his medical degree from the University of Ibadan Medical School in Nigeria, did his internship in internal medicine at Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and then completed a residency program in anesthesiology at Vanderbilt University Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee. Procedural anesthesia is a technique of administering sedatives or dissociative agents with or without analgesics to induce a state that allows the patient to tolerate unpleasant procedures while maintaining cardiorespiratory function. It was formerly called conscious sedation. There are 3 types of procedural anesthesia, (minimal sedation, moderate sedation and deep sedation) depending on the level or responsiveness to verbal and tactile stimuli and whether airway intervention may be required or not. In minimal sedation there is usually normal response to verbal stimulus and the airway usually would not require intervention. In deep sedation, there is usually purposeful response to repeated or painful stimuli.
