Your son could be a late bloomer (delayed puberty). This can be normal. However, if he hasn't started any puberty, he should be evaluated. READ MORE
Why is my daughter having irregular periods?
It is normal to have irregular periods during the first 2 years of the periods starting. If it is more than 2 years since she started, she should be evaluated further by a endocrinologist or a gynecologist. READ MORE
At what age should kids be checked for diabetes?
If your daughter is overweight, this would be a good age to screen her for type 2 diabetes. READ MORE
How should we help our son lose weight?
Children should drink about 3 glasses of milk per day. Everything else should be water. Appropriate serving size for your child is the size of his fist. 1 serving protein: meat, 1 serving carbohydrates and then 2 servings of vegetables would be ideal - please see choosemyplate.gov. Also, he should get 1 hour of exercise everyday in addition to gym class. READ MORE
Can steroids impact the height of my son?
Yes it is possible that steroids are impacting his height. Please do not stop the steroids without discussing with the doctor who prescribed the steroids. READ MORE
Is it normal for children to drink more water than adults?
This could be normal, especially if your son is very active in sports. If he wakes up at night to drink, wets the bed, or gets up a lot at night to urinate, he could be showing signs of diabetes or an inability to concentrate his urine. READ MORE
What are the symptoms of juvenile diabetes?
Typical symptoms of diabetes are drinking more, urinating more, getting up at night to urinate, wetting the bed and/or weight loss. Any of these symptoms does not mean your child has diabetes but it means he should be seen by a healthcare professional. READ MORE
How can I help my son grow to his potential?
Growth hormone is mostly secreted during deep sleep. Make sure your son is getting 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Also make sure that he is eating a well-balanced diet. No, I do not recommend supplements. READ MORE
What are the complications associated with juvenile diabetes?
The closer you can keep your son's blood sugars to normal the less likely he will have complications. Please remember both low and high blood sugars can cause problems, so you need to work closely with his diabetes care provider to take the best care of your son. Almost any organ can have problems due to diabetes, but we know that the risk of complications go down the closer you can keep the blood sugars to normal. the other thing to prevent complications is to get regular diabetic eye exam. Your provider will also start screening for protein in the urine and high cholesterol in the blood at some point in the future. READ MORE

It sounds like this may be a temporary situation related to changes during puberty. You could ask his physician to check him out to make sure it is just a temporary puberty issue. READ MORE

Unless your son has diabetes, someone with a low blood sugar needs an evaluation to figure out why the blood sugar was low. Please make an appointment with his primary care provider. READ MORE

It could be hormonal. Or, it could be that your son needs to be reminded of a healthy lifestyle (healthy eating, portion control and exercise). READ MORE
My daughter is losing her appetite. Is this connected to a thyroid imbalance?
You did not tell me how old your daughter is. Often teenagers do not eat breakfast because they would rather sleep a little longer. This is not healthy and I tell all of my patients that they should be eating breakfast. However, it is also a normal thing for teenagers to do. Are there really growth supplements my son can take to be taller?
In children who meet specific criteria, growth hormone will help them grow taller. However, growth hormone must be prescribed by a physician and not all short children qualify. There are no other growth supplements that work, no matter what you read on the internet. READ MORE
My daughter is extremely short for her age. What should I do?
Make sure that your daughter is getting plenty of sleep (8-10 hours per night). Growth hormone is produced mainly during deep sleep. Also, make sure she is eating a balanced diet. Also, ask her primary care provider to do an evaluation and possibly refer her to a pediatric endocrinologist. READ MORE
My son is suddenly gaining a lot of weight. Could it be a hormonal issue?
It could be hormonal, but is more likely that your son needs to be more careful in what he eats and be encouraged to exercise one hour per day, everyday. He should only be drinking water and no more than 3 glasses of milk per day. You should request a referral to a dietician. READ MORE
Can juvenile diabetes be treated?
Hopefully, we will find a cure in your son's lifetime. Until then, it is a lifelong disease. We definitely are developing better and better ways to treat/manage diabetes. We also think we are closer to a cure. READ MORE

Yes, it can be normal. However, you may wish to have your daughter seen by her primary care provider to make sure that there isn't something else going on that she would not want to talk to you about. READ MORE
