Get to know Nephrologist Dr. Kabir Olaniran, who serves patients in Texas.

Dr. Olaniran is a fellowship-trained nephrologist specializing in kidney disease and dialysis. He joined the faculty at UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas in 2019.

His clinical practice involves both inpatient and outpatient care of acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, end stage kidney disease, and kidney replacement therapies. He primarily studies risk factors for kidney disease and kidney-related outcomes among Black Americans with sickle cell trait and sickle cell disease.

Educated in Nigeria, Dr. Olaniran graduated with his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from the College of Medicine, University of Lago in 2006. He then relocated to the United States, completing his residency in internal medicine at Lincoln Medical Center in the Bronx, New York in 2015. 

Through a fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, he received advanced training in nephrology in 2019. He also earned a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

With years of experience, the doctor is board-certified in both internal medicine and nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Holding an academic title, Dr. Olaniran is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Nephrology at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

An authority in his field, Dr. Olaniran was the recipient of the ASN’s Ben J. Lipps Fellowship Grant, the ASN’s William E. Mitch International Scholars Award, and Massachusetts General Hospital’s Dennis A. Ausiello Outstanding Postdoctoral Fellow Award.

His interests outside of medicine include spending time with his wife and two children, traveling, and photography.
