Among his academic appointments, he serves on the Clinical Adjunct Faculty at Marshall B. Ketchum University in Fullerton, California (since 2019), and as a Clinical Instructor/Preceptor at Western University of Health Sciences in Pomona, California (since 2018). He is also a volunteer physician with AVP Beach Volleyball, a team physician for the Ryder Cup Trust Celebrity Ryder Cup Matches (Monaco), as well as a reviewer for the Global Spine Journal, the International Journal of Spine Surgery, and the Hospital for Special Surgery Journal.
Regarding his academic history, Dr. Shifflett received a bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience from the University of Virginia with High Honors before graduating with Highest Distinction from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his internship and residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery, affiliated with New York – Presbyterian Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical College.
After venturing on a traveling fellowship to Japan, where he studied complex cervical and reconstructive spine surgery under the tutelage of some of the world’s top cervical and lumbar spine surgeons, he returned to the United States to complete a minimally invasive and complex spinal surgery fellowship at Rush University in Chicago. There, he learned microsurgical techniques, focusing on outpatient, fusion, and non-fusion procedures for the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.
In order to stay on top of the latest trends in his field, he remains a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society for Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery, the North American Spine Society, the Cervical Spine Research Society, AOSpine North America, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the California Medical Association, the Los Angeles County Medical Association, the Hospital for Special Surgery Alumni Association, the Rush University Alumni Association, the Salerni Collegium Medical Alumni Association, the University of Virginia Alumni Foundation, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
Highly recognized in the field of spinal surgery, Dr. Shifflett has presented at numerous conferences, conducted multiple publications on minimally invasive and reconstructive spine surgery, authored two chapters in the textbook “Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery”, as well as has received a variety of grants and awards for cutting-edge research and clinical studies. His research has been presented throughout the United States and internationally in six different countries.
With an outstanding commitment to his speciality, he is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including most recently being named to the North American Spine Society 20 under 40 – an honor bestowed on 20 of the best and brightest spine care providers in the United States.
On a more personal note, Dr. Shifflett is an avid golfer and sports enthusiast and enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters.
