Get to know Anesthesiologist Dr. Melissa Byrne, who serves patients in Michigan.

A trusted anesthesiologist, Dr. Byrne is affiliated with University of Michigan Anesthesiology, working clinically at the University Hospital, East Ann Arbor outpatient surgical center, and the Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital.

Academically, her journey began at Kalamazoo College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry. Her initial foray into the world of science led her to work as a chemist and research assistant. During this time, she specialized in developing GCMS protocols for neonatal toxin exposures, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of toxicology.

Driven by a passion for healthcare and a desire to expand her horizons, Dr. Byrne continued her education. She obtained a master’s degree in Public Health with a focus on management from the prestigious University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This additional expertise in public health management set the stage for her future in healthcare administration.

Determined to have a more direct impact on patient care, she pursued her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Michigan State University. Her journey in medicine included an internship and residency training at the University of Michigan, where she honed her clinical skills and deepened her understanding of patient care.

After her residency, Dr. Byrne ventured into private practice in Williamsburg, Virginia, where she gained valuable experience in patient care, understanding the intricacies of private healthcare delivery. However, her dedication to learning and improving patient outcomes brought her back to Michigan.

In her pursuit of excellence, she completed a fellowship in regional and ambulatory anesthesia. She not only excelled in this program but also chose to continue her work as faculty at the University of Michigan. Her academic interests include root cause analyses, resident education, clinical point-of-care ultrasound and regional anesthesia.

An authority in her field, the doctor is board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA). As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, they measure the patient’s respiration.
