Derrick Varner, PhD, PA-C, a distinguished Certified Physician Assistant, is making waves in the healthcare and biotechnology sectors, leveraging nearly 30 years of service in the United States Air Force and a wealth of expertise in health sciences. Originally from Chicago, Dr. Varner is currently employed as a Senior Medical Science Liaison at ThermoFisher Scientific’s ImmunoDiagnostic Division remotely in San Antonio, Texas, where he plays a pivotal role in educating healthcare providers about atopic and autoimmunity disease states.

In his current position, Dr. Varner fosters relationships with key opinion leaders and specialists globally, facilitating the exchange of knowledge and best practices in patient care. Among his notable achievements is the launch of the ThermoFisher Scientific Prestige Award, a $25,000 research grant designed to inspire U.S. Allergy Fellows to conduct innovative research in molecular allergy. This initiative aims to enhance patient care and contribute to the growing body of research knowledge in the field.

Dr. Varner’s academic journey is as impressive as his professional accomplishments. He graduated from the Interservice Physician Assistant Program, accredited through the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, earning both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Physician Assistant Studies. He further pursued his Doctor of Philosophy Degree from Trident International University, solidifying his expertise in the medical field.

In addition to his role at ThermoFisher Scientific, Dr. Varner enjoys practicing aesthetic medicine at A’nis Aesthetics MedSpa and Wellness Clinic in Cibolo, focusing on corrective skin treatments and overall wellness. He also practices PRN at Laurel Ridge Treatment Hospital, where he provides medical consultations for a diverse age range, from pediatrics to geriatrics. 

Dr. Varner’s commitment to servant leadership is evident in his co-founding of the iC3 Clinic, which provides essential medical and mental health services at little or no charge to low-income, uninsured, or underinsured individuals through volunteer healthcare professionals. As Vice President of the Board of Directors of the Bexar County Physician Assistant Society, he leads a group of healthcare professionals in advancing medical services in the seventh-largest city in the nation.

Furthermore, Dr. Varner is involved with the Now Start Community Foundation as Vice President, which aims to provide educational and healthcare resources to underserved communities in San Antonio. His dedication extends to coaching, where he serves as a Character Coach for Nation of Coaches and is assigned to the Texas A&M San Antonio University Men’s Basketball Team as a resource to the head coach, coaching staff, and student athletes.

Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Varner enjoys reading, exercising, and traveling, with a particular fondness for Europe and Hawaii. His multifaceted career and passion for community service exemplify his commitment to improving healthcare access and quality for all.
