A 2011 graduate of The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Dr. DeFontes III went on to perform his residency in orthopaedic surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. During his training, he worked as a medical officer at the Food and Drug Administration in the Division of Orthopaedic Devices, overseeing the approval of various orthopaedic devices and implants. 

Wanting to further his education, he completed his fellowship in foot and ankle surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He also completed additional training in trauma orthopaedics at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center and in pediatric orthopaedics at the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.

During his orthopaedic training in both Baltimore and Boston, Dr. DeFontes III had the opportunity to take care of athletes of all ages, including local high school, college, and professional sports teams. He has a particular interest in minimally invasive techniques within foot and ankle surgery, with the goal of getting patients back to sports and athletic activities in a timely manner.
