  • How long does an epidural last for knee surgery?

Great question. That will all depend on the dose you get and when the epidural shuts off. Assuming it’s for intraop only and not run post-op. Once it’s off, you can expect to regain feeling and function anywhere between 2-6 hours. Hope that helps! READ MORE

  • Is local anesthesia safe for geriatric patients?

    Yes very safe! READ MORE

  • Is general anesthesia used for an appendectomy?

Yes. It is general anesthesia with an endotracheal breathing tube used for appendectomy. Hope that helps! READ MORE

  • How long do you have to wait to breastfeed after anesthesia?

You don’t have to wait at all. It is safe to breastfeed immediately after general anesthesia. It is largely a myth that medicine from anesthesia will be present in any amount in your breast milk. You are good to take care of your baby as soon as you are up for it after your procedure! READ MORE

  • How long does vomiting last after general anesthesia?

It is not the norm but it is a risk of general anesthesia. Some risk factors include being female, history of motion sickness, type of surgery, family or personal history of post-op nausea and vomiting. There are many techniques to try to prevent this. It should only last about 24hrs after surgery if you experience it. Hope that helps! READ MORE

  • What anesthesia is used for foot surgery?

It depends on how extensive your foot surgery is. Typically, it will be done with a nerve block in the pre operative area with local anesthesia under ultrasound to help with pain. Then you would likely go off to sleep with general anesthesia for the actual surgery. Hope that helps! READ MORE

  • Are you sedated for hemorrhoid surgery?

It depends on what position the surgeon has you in, your risk favors and your anesthesiologist. You may get sedation but there’s also a chance you will get general anesthesia. Your anesthesia team can discuss that in more detail with you if you have specific concerns. Hope that helps! READ MORE

  • How should I sleep after spinal anesthesia?

You can sleep how you prefer, in whatever position that is comfortable for you. Your position should have no effect since you will likely not be discharged until the spinal anesthesia has worn off and well after the procedure. Hope that helps! Felicia READ MORE

  • How long does it take to wake up after breast augmentation?

It depends on multiple factors including length of surgery, anesthetic choice and individual characteristics. Patients are woken up immediately after surgery is complete. However, patients often don’t start to recall until they are in the recovery room perhaps 15-30min later. You will likely feel drowsy for the rest of the day. Hope that helps! READ MORE

  • Can sinus surgery be done with local anesthesia?

Sinus surgery typically cannot be done with local. Of course that depends on the nature and extent of the procedure. If you are going into a hospital to have it done then I will assume it is something that cannot be done under local. Your airway has to be protected to prevent the blood from sinus surgery entering your lungs which will require general anesthesia. Hope that helps! READ MORE

A board-certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Heath is affiliated with Anesthesia Specialists of Bethlehem, PC, seeing patients at St. Luke’s University Hospital and Health Network in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and Geisinger St. Luke’s (GSL) Hospital in Orwigsburg, PA.

Formed in 1994, Anesthesia Specialists of Bethlehem, PC (ASB) provides all anesthesia care to the patients of St. Luke’s University Health Network at Bethlehem, Anderson, Monroe, Miners, Warren Campuses, and of late, Geisinger St. Luke’s, Sacred Heart, Easton, Upper Bucks and Carbon Campuses. They believe that focusing on patient care for the entire perioperative period improves patient health, safety, and satisfaction. Therefore, their mission is to provide comprehensive perioperative services, from the moment the patient is scheduled for surgery to the time that the patient is discharged from the hospital.

In the early days of her academic career, Dr. Heath earned her medical degree from the Ross University School of Medicine. She completed her internship and residency in anesthesiology at the University of Connecticut, followed by her fellowship in critical care medicine at Washington University in St. Louis.

Following her training, Dr. Heath attained board certification in anesthesiology and critical care medicine through the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) as well as became subspecialty board-certified in neurocritical care. As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care. Its mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. Dr. Heath now serves as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Anesthesia medical director at GSL.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. Anesthesiologists have a vast amount of responsibilities that include vigilant monitoring of the patient’s vital signs during surgery, managing acute pain, maintaining safety, and most importantly, acting as the patient’s advocate in the operating room.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Heath loves to spend time with her family and work on her book, Spirit of a Hummingbird: Memories of a Childhood on the Run, set to be published this summer. She looks forward to traveling after the pandemic.
