Graduating with summa cum laude honors from the University of New Mexico, Dr. Averna went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and graduated with Sigma Sigma Phi Osteopathic Honors from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2012. He then completed his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Temple University Hospital / Moss Rehabilitation in Philadelphia, where he served as Chief Resident in his final year. During his training, he was awarded the Margo and Daniel Polett Humanitarian Resident Award & the Resident of the Year Award; he is the only resident to win both awards in the program to date. Finally, he completed his fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of New Mexico Hospital.
He is board-certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and subspecialty board-certified in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR). The mission of the ABPMR is to serve the public by improving the quality of patient care in physical medicine and rehabilitation. This is accomplished through a process of certification and maintenance of certification that fosters excellence and encourages continuous learning.
Priding himself on staying up to date in his field, he publishes regularly in medical journals and has contributed to many textbook chapters in the fields of rehabilitation and pain medicine.
