Get to know Gastroenterologist Dr. Rafiul S. Islam, who serves patients in Lubbock, Texas.

Dr. Islam is a board-certified gastroenterologist who delivers tremendous service and care to patients at Lubbock Gastroenterology. His areas of clinical interest include colon cancer screening, hemorrhoids treatment, GERD, and celiac disease.

For his entire career, Dr. Islam has balanced a love of working with patients and an obsession with cutting-edge scientific developments that are changing the way we see digestive health, and medicine as a whole. As a functional gastroenterologist, he is able to provide patients with more treatment options than those offered by traditional Western Medicine.

He prides himself on being present when speaking to patients and being a great listener. This is paramount, since collectively potentially life-changing decisions relative to a patient’s health are going to be made. Dr. Islam feels these decisions are best made when patients get their questions answered and are properly educated on their health condition.

His favorite aspect of being a doctor is making his patients feel better. That process begins by being able to provide answers to his patients. He realizes that most people are frustrated by the health care system due to the lack of actual answers patients receive regarding their health problems.

A West Texas native, Dr. Islam grew up in Odessa. He was trained locally, receiving his medical degree and completing his residency in internal medicine at Texas Tech University Health Science Center. He received additional training in gastroenterology and hepatology at the Mayo Clinic.

This highly accredited training coupled with his academic and work experience as a gastroenterologist separate Dr. Islam from other physicians in the Lubbock area.

Serving as an Assistant Professor of Texas Tech University Health Science Center, his hospital affiliations include UMC Health System – Lubbock, Covenant Medical Center, Grace Clinic, and Lubbock Heart Hospital.

Board-certified in gastroenterology, Dr. Islam is a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Among his professional affiliations, he is an active member of the American Medical Association, the American Gastroenterological Association, the Texas Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, the Texas Medical Association, and the Lubbock Medical Society.

Also, he has been recognized as a Fellow of Gastroenterology by the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine focused on the digestive system and its disorders. A gastroenterologist is a physician who has extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the esophagus, stomach, small intestines, colon, liver, pancreas, and biliary system.

For his work as a gastroenterologist and university professor, Dr. Islam has been recognized with multiple awards and distinctions.

Outside of practicing medicine, he enjoys spending time with his family, doing cross fit, and traveling.
