  • Is a CT scan of the abdomen accurate?

CT scans are only as accurate as the cooperation of the patient and the expertise of the tech allows,; the more obese a patient, the more difficult the scan may be to read, but then again fat separates organs and this cn be helpful. Alot, depends on what the provider is trying to elucidate. READ MORE

  • Can you repair a hernia without mesh?

The use of mesh is sadly the go-to repair type for any hernia location. If you have muscle ( like ~6 pack) in your ventral abdominal wall and some abdominal wall thickness, ie. subcutaneous fat, then you can request NO mesh and ask for the surgeon to take the time to use the tissue mentioned above for a no mesh repair. BTW, I would recommend No general anesthesia; an epidural is able to prevent moving and pain and the newer one's las postop 30 min. only. Personally , I had a repair with abdominal muscle turned into to fill the gap (hernia site) after I accidentally pulled out sutures from a previous abdominal surgery-it has done just fine; and I would suggest that you ask if the 2 meshes can be removed due to the constant ache/pain both cause-this should be covered by insurance as a surgical necessity -I cannot say for sure but that mesh is a big problem for many people.! (like dental implants problems). READ MORE

If you have an HMO plan, PCP needs to make a referral to a neurologist or neurosurgeon. If your insurance is a PPO then you can make your own appointment for answers. Sorry about your PCP. READ MORE

Best to check with the facility that would perform that surgery. The MD there knows the benefits and risks depending on your specific needs. READ MORE

  • Is it my gallbladder?

Gallbladder problems site specifically to apex of right shoulder w g blade (the pointed end). The color of stool is important, darker does not define wether old blood in GI tract, or greener, which is more like gallbladder probs; if so, the stool should float, not sink to bottom. The overall picture with what you have considered your history, points to a plethora of probs, like nosebleed draining into stomach, medicine like aspirin that can cause stomach bleeding, and the (dreaded) cancer, anywhere in GI tract, however, pancreatitis from your abdominal and back complaints seems most likely. It is painful and unrelenting; and if appt with GI doctor is possible, that would be first option over ER, where too many people are ill and contagious. The bleeding was not described in color, which would rule in or out hemorrhoids. Better history is needed, but GI MD can get it with appropriate diagnostic tests as well. Get on the appt. READ MORE

  • How common are hernia mesh complications?

While I do not know the number, I would be aware that any foreign body, no matter how designed it may be to be nonreactive, can have unexpected reactivity per individual. If the surgeon can use your own tissue to prevent mesh use, I would definitely choose that option. My surgeon could not find enough bulky tissue to repair a ventral hernia, so he innovatively used a part of the third external abdominal muscle to fill in the "hole" and pull together the midline skin. I do get small cramps when I move a certain way that takes about 30 secs to be relieved - you may have to expect that rather than extrusion and inflammatory reaction to the mesh implant. READ MORE

  • How is abdominal hernia surgery performed?

Please ask the surgeon of your choice. There are many ways that this surgery can be done, but the one that is done on you will be the one that you will want to know about. READ MORE

  • How do you treat a big toe after nail removal?

Apparently, either the ER MD or your podiatrist did not talk to you about this! It is hard for me to believe that nothing was said to you, no paper instructions given, etc. In general, foot/toe surgery needs to elevated the majority of the first post-procedure day, and up on pillows at night. Only open-toed shoes on that foot for at least 18 days - may shower, but must pat dry the toe. No direct sun on the toe until the nail is almost completely grown in. READ MORE

  • How do you get out of bed after stomach surgery?

Get on the side of the bed which you will be getting out of, turn on your side slowly while lying down, and gradually sit up as you roll out of the bed. It would be great to have someone in front of you to take your hands to steady you as you go to stand up. READ MORE

  • Is herniated disc surgery painful?

Best to ask your surgeon what his patients tell him. Usually, pain medicine is offered, sometimes the area of the surgery is implanted with small anti-pain pellets that dissolve after several days. READ MORE

  • Can I work with a herniated disc?

  • Can I eat if I suspect appendicitis?

No. Usually, you would not have an appetite anyway. If surgery is a possibility, it is always best to have no food. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to recover from shoulder bone spur surgery?

The answer is best served by the very MD that will be your shoulder surgeon. He can tell by the tissue upon which he works its healing capacity. I would suggest eating the bone-in sardines to help the bone itself to heal fastest. Product from Ecological Formulas named Placenta that helps the soft tissue to heal better as well. Listen to his postop instructions and follow to the "T". READ MORE

  • Can you feel a herniated disc with your hand?

If the patient says so and he is thin, then possibly. It depends on so many variables: where his pain is may be 1-2 vertebrae above/below the actual site herniation. If it is a big bulge, it would be to one side or the other of the midline, and usually there is a problem with shooting pain in an extremity (Radiculopathy). If there is any question, an MRI will show the problem or not. READ MORE

  • What is the best surgery for GERD?

Have you tried changing diets to relieve the 'burn' from specific foods? Have you tried a product called Refluxin from Ecogical Formulas - contrary to the botttle's directions, take after the meal chewing separately three to four tablets followed by a small amount of water. If heartburn occurrs between meals, then take 2 tabs chewed apart with a tiny bit of water afterwards. not to exceed 8 chewables per day. Weight loss, if needed, will also help decrease or even cease heartburn. READ MORE
