About

Tara Joiner is an ACT Certified Cognitive Therapist and Licensed Professional Counselor with over 12 years of experience in the mental health field. Concho Valley Counseling is a private counseling practice located in San Angelo, Texas.  Tara's practice extends to meet the needs of patients throughout the state of Texas by offering Online Therapy or Telehealth.

In addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Tara is trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing Therapy) and Certified in Cognitive Processing  Therapy, both empirically proven effective forms of treatment for PTSD or trauma.

I specialize in the treatment of various anxiety disorders, including OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder), PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and more. I also provide couples therapy and am level 1 trained in Gottman Therapy for Couples.

As someone with OCD myself, I have a unique preparedness and sensitivity for working with OCD sufferers. I want to spread the message that sound therapeutic treatment for OCD not only exists, but it is also highly effective, and recovery is possible. The opportunity to help a fellow sufferer move beyond what can only be described as agony to a place of hope and healing is immensely rewarding.

Why do I focus on anxiety disorders you ask?

For me, treating anxiety is about helping ambitious individuals overcome self-limiting fear. Are you living life according to your values? Your design? Or is fear in the driver’s seat and life is just following wherever fear leads it?  What if fear no longer dictated your choices and rather you chose actions in line with what is important and meaningful to you? I want to help you find the courage to do this; to show up and be seen; to step outside of your comfort zone. There's a sense of ease and lightness that awaits when we learn how to live wholeheartedly and authentically. I want you to experience this.  Even more, I want you to get to see what comes next, the "fruits" of this way of living. Our gifts are unleashed in some amazing ways when we walk inside our story and learn to cozy up next to fear instead of running from it or letting it run us.

Speaking of fear...

Opening up to a therapist can be daunting. But finding the right therapist, one you trust and connect with is an important first step. I’d be happy to speak with you by phone to not only give you a chance to get a feel for me and how we connect but to answer any questions you may have about me, the kinds of therapy I offer, my experience and style of counseling, and the therapy process in general. I respect those who are skeptical of therapy and welcome any questions you may have before we decide to work together. It is important to me that my clients feel safe, feel they can trust me, and feel comfortable and accepted no matter what their life experience has been or is.
