  • Depression

Why is dealing with depression so difficult?Depression drains your energy, hope, and drive, making it difficult to take the steps that will help you to feel better. • How can a social worker help a child with ADHD?

A social worker could work with the child on developing skills to cope with the ADHD symptoms. Additionally, working with the parent on appropriate re-direction and parenting strategies is another way a social worker could help. READ MORE

  • How do I not live in fear after being in a foster home and seeing terrible things?

I would suggest seeking therapy, particularly aimied at trauma. DBT therapy is one excellent form of therapy for trauma victims. READ MORE

  • What are the most common signs that there is domestic violence in a home?

Outward signs of abuse are hearing the actual violence. This may involve hearing physical abuse such as someone being hit or kicked and yelling/screaming. You may also see evidence of physical abuse on someone's body. Sexual assault and abuse, unless witnessed, would need to be gathered by a professional during an exam. Emotional abuse is harder to detect. At any rate, if you suspect someone is in danger call the police to investigate the situation, and they will intervene. It is often difficult to get a victim help if they refuse unfortunately. READ MORE

  • When should a social worker be called?

This depends on the protocol in your particular area. I suggest calling the police, they will then either resond or re-direct you to filing a report with Child Protective Services. CPS will investigate if needed. READ MORE

  • Do people with multiple personalities commit crimes?

This is too vague to answer. A lot of people commit crimes, not just people with multiple personalities. This isn't an actual medical diagnosis. It was changed years ago to Dissociative Identity Disorder which is a response to severe trauma. Most vets have this diagnosis, and it is also more common in women. You basically detach from reality. More often individuals who use drugs commit a great deal of crime, or others with personality disorders. Crime is not specific to the personality disorder you asked about. READ MORE

  • Do social workers get anxiety or depression?

Yes of course, as we are human beings like everyone else. READ MORE

  • How do you handle the stress of being a social worker?

Getting sleep, exercising and eating well are good habits. Any sort of outlet like meditation or being outdoors also can help. READ MORE

  • Can a social worker help a child with a disability?

At least in my state, there are a variety of case management programs for free for children with disabilities either through school or the county/state. If you are seeking direct 1:1 counseling, there are also social workers that do that. READ MORE

  • What are the types of social work degrees?

You can get a Bachelor of Social work which will qualify you for a variety of positions that are not as complex. Most county agencies will also hire Bachelors level social workers. You can also get a Master of Social Work which opens up a lot of doors for you and increases pay. From there you can specialize in certain areas like Medical, School, Behavioral Health etc READ MORE

  • Is foster care bad for children's mental health?

The foster care system exists because the birth parents are neglecting or abusing their child. Therefore, well not a perfect system, it exists as a safe place for children to temporarily live until the natural parent is capable of providing correct parental care. READ MORE

  • Difference between school social worker and school psychologist?

A psychologist only does testing to determine diagnoses for special education or other IEP services. A social worker provides counseling either to the student or a group of students, family mediation, community resources, and a general support to the administration and students. Often, they are also involved in team and staff meetings for IEPs. They may also be involved in trauma or abuse situations and coordinate with the police and child protection. They can also assist with general behavioral concerns. READ MORE

  • Are conversations between student and social worker confidential?

There isn't enough information to determine exactly what is happening. Also, the age of the student is reported. At times school personnel will intervene and family will not be involved. It really depends on the situation. In general, if a child is to participate in ongoing counseling or social work a parental consent would need to be completed. However, yes overall anything a child says to a therapist/counselor/social worker is confidential unless it is against the law. Those situations would be things such as abuse or neglect. READ MORE

  • Will social workers respond to 911 calls from now on?

A 911 call would be directed to your local police dispatch unit. READ MORE

  • Can a social worker help improve my son's behavior?

If your school district or school has a social worker they could definitely intervene. Most school districts also have behavioral support therapists and counselors. I am not sure what grade he is in? I'd start with speaking with the teacher or administration about your concerns and they can direct you appropriately. READ MORE

  • Why is domestic violence increasing during the quarantines?

It is increasing because people are locked inside their homes, when generally they spend time doing other activities. Also, the quarantine has increased anxiety and depression amongst individuals, as well as financial constraints; all of which lead to an increased in strain on relationships. READ MORE

  • Where can I start getting custody back of my daughter?

I would assume the custody has been issued by a court and judge. I would start by getting legal counsel and petitioning the court. They may or may not ask you to complete a psychological assessment and other parenting courses. But custody issues would go through the court, not a social worker. READ MORE

  • Can stress from work affect my relationships?

Social Workers have a very difficult job. I have found leaving work at work, and involving myself in outside activities to relieve stress helps with this. Find some sort of exercise or other activity that you can use as an outlet. Also, I find spending time alone from your partner to decompress for an hour or so is beneficial. READ MORE

  • My friend doesn't take care of her mother. Is this elder abuse?

It is not elder abuse to not want to take care of a family member. There is not enough information to determine what you mean by 'not doing anything', if she has an activated health care power of attorney and this daughter is the agent then yes she should be acting on behalf of the patient to address medical needs. However, we are all our own person and it is really not anyone's responsibility to care for someone else by law, now whether this is moral is another question. Anytime, you have concerns regarding an elder's safety the best course of action is to contact the non-emergency police number and request a welfare check. The police are used to doing these and it can be achieved much faster than a call to APS. However, contacting APS is also fine as they will just take your information and assess whether this is abuse or neglect and go from there. READ MORE

  • How can I help my child cope with my divorce?

I'd recommend finding a child and adolescent therapist to work with your son individually, as well as therapy for you and your husband separately during this time. Try to keep routines and schedules as normal as possible. Children are very intuitive, so try to be honest, but also make best efforts to keep negativity regarding the divorce and your spouse to a minimum. READ MORE

  • Are social workers working during the coronavirus?

That would depend on the individual agency or if the social worker operates his or her own practice. Overall, social workers are working. READ MORE
