Get to know Addiction Medicine Physician Dr. David Michael Sherman, who serves patients in Florida & Missouri.

Dr. Sherman, a top addiction medicine physician, is the CEO of Wellness Treasure in Florida and now in St. Louis, Missouri. He leads a highly-trained staff of master level certified addiction professionals. Men and women from all over Missouri and the United States come to Wellness Treasure to get the recovery care they need and deserve.

Wellness Treasure specializes in opioid and alcohol treatment, and the team treats addiction like the disease that it truly is. Dr. Sherman is on a mission to fight the battle of the opioid crisis.  Recovery plans include prescription medications that are specifically chosen to make the withdrawal process smoother and more comfortable. He chooses medications and determines dosages based on the individual, and then makes adjustments as needed to reduce or eliminate cravings. After his patients are stabilized with medication, he then introduces them to individual, group, marital, family, and cognitive behavioral therapy based upon their needs. Twelve step facilitation or SMART recovery is always encouraged.

A native Missourian, Dr. Sherman also serves as the Medical Director of a detox and residential program, Sana Lake Recovery Center, in Dittmer, Missouri. A Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (FASAM), the doctor is board-certified in addiction medicine by the American Board of Preventive Medicine, which is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties that issues “certificates of special knowledge” in the specialty of preventive medicine.

Following the completion of his bachelor’s degree from Westminster College in 1982, Dr. Sherman went on to earn his medical degree from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1988. He then performed his residency in otolaryngology at the Louisiana State University Medical Center in 1995. He completed a two-year fellowship in addiction medicine within the Department of Psychiatry, Division of Addiction Medicine, at the University of Florida College of Medicine in 2016. 

In order to stay up to date in his field, he remains a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Society of Addiction Medicine, the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine, the Missouri State Medical Association, the Saint Louis Metropolitan Medical Society, the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, Age Management Medicine, the American College of Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy, and the American Laryngological, Rhinological, and Otological Society. 

Furthermore, he is board-certified in otolaryngology-head & neck surgery by the American Board of Otolaryngology, which is a non-profit corporation that has set the mission of ensuring professional standards with certificates and memberships, and has offered training in the fields of head neck surgery to professionals since 1924.

Addiction medicine is a medical subspecialty that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and recovery of persons with addiction, of those with substance-related and addictive disorders, and of people who show unhealthy use of substances including alcohol, nicotine, prescription medicine, and other illicit and licit drugs. Addiction medicine physicians provide comprehensive care to improve the health outcomes for patients with a wide range of addiction disorders, including drug and alcohol addiction, and pharmaceutical dependency.

Among his volunteer experiences, Dr. Sherman serves as a guest speaker for the Hillsborough County Anti-Drug Alliance, the Pasco Alliance for Substance Addiction Prevention, and the FSAM Addiction Health Summit.
