Get to know Anesthesiologist Dr. Michael James Scott, who serves patients in Pennsylvania.

A seasoned anesthesiologist, Dr. Scott is the Division Chief of Critical Care Medicine and the Medical Director of Penn ELERT Tele-Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he is also a Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care. He specializes in opioid-sparing anesthesia & perioperative medicine, and has extensive background in perioperative surgical outcome quality improvement and implementation science, working in five countries with different health systems.

With a broad educational background, he received his medical degree from Birmingham University Medical School and completed his residency in anesthesiology at various hospitals in the UK, including Birmingham City Hospital, Frenchay Hospital, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. He also completed a fellowship at the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children.

Maintaining fellowship status, Dr. Scott is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FRCA), and Fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FFICM). 

Continuously advancing his efforts, he is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, the Association of University Anesthesiologists, the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society (President), the International Anesthesia Research Society, the Medical Society of Pennsylvania, the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, the Society of Computing in Anesthesia, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the UK Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Society, and the World Health Organization.

In his professional experience, Dr. Scott has privileges to treat patients at Chester County Hospital, Penn Medicine Rittenhouse Long-Term Acute Care Hospital, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and Pennsylvania Hospital.

As a leading expert in opioid-sparing anesthesia, he has been involved in efforts to reduce opioid use in surgery, including participating in webinars for the Office of the White House Office of National Drug Policy (ONDCP) and co-authoring key guidelines. He has also served on the editorial board for the U.K. and European Resuscitation Council’s Advanced Life Support for 15 years.

In addition to his work on opioid reduction, Dr. Scott has conducted research on the long-term effects of acute kidney injury and the use of goal-directed hemodynamic algorithms to reduce its occurrence. He is also interested in the use of telemedicine and artificial intelligence in critical care, specifically the use of machine learning with physiological waveforms.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. Anesthesiologists have a vast amount of responsibilities that include vigilant monitoring of the patient’s vital signs during surgery, managing acute pain, maintaining safety, and most importantly, acting as the patient’s advocate in the operating room.
