Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Tina Thakrar, who serves the population of Virginia.

Dr. Thakrar is a Psychiatrist currently in Virginia working in Private Practice. As a psychiatrist, Dr. Thakrar diagnoses and treats mental illnesses. Dr. Thakrar may treat patients through a variety of methods including medications, psychotherapy or talk therapy, psychosocial interventions and more, depending on each individual case. Different medications that a psychiatrist might prescribe include antidepressants, antipsychotic mediations, mood stabilizers, stimulants, sedatives and hypnotics. Dr. Thakrar treats conditions like depression, anxiety, OCD, eating disorders, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, insomnia, ADD and other mental illnesses.

In regards to her education she graduated with her Bachelor’s degree from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2007 followed by her medical degree from Albany Medical College in 2012. She completed all her training through the University of Virginia Health System where she completed her residency in 2015 followed by her child and adolescent psychiatry fellow in 2017. 

She is dual board-certified in Psychiatry and Child & Adolescent Psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Patients can be assured that an ABPN board-certified psychiatrist has specialized skills and knowledge to diagnose and treat problems ranging from emergencies to the long-term medical management of psychiatric disorders.

Psychiatrists can order diagnostic laboratory tests, prescribe medications, provide psychotherapy, evaluate and treat psychological and interpersonal problems, and give continuing care for psychiatric problems. Psychiatrists are also prepared to intervene with individuals and families who are experiencing a crisis or dealing with great stress. Psychiatrists may also act as consultants to primary care physicians, or to non-physicians such as psychologists, social workers and nurses.
