Sometimes soaking in cold water can help with swelling and associated nerve type of pain, but it is only masking an underlying problem. Have you seen a podiatrist to see if they can help you with topical ointments, physical therapy, or even pharmaceutical management? READ MORE

  • I had an ankle injury 6 years ago. I am having pain in the same region again. What could be the reason?

This could be due to arthritis or a new strain/sprain to ankle ligaments...I would definitely see a podiatrist to see your options including physical therapy, immobilization, a repeat MRI or an injection. Activity modification and good shoegear are always beneficial. READ MORE

  • What are the best creams for toenail fungus?

Per studies, only oral medications will really help you (with success rates over 80%). Any creams, ointments or lacquers will only work at best 15-20% of the time with daily usage for a minimum of 365 days. With this being said, lamisil is a good cream for fungus. READ MORE

  • How can I reduce the growth of hammer toe?

There is no way to 'fix' a hammertoe without surgery, however you can slow down its progression with cushioning/padding and hammertoe crest pads. We walk on our feet so with every step we are increasing any foot deformities. Hammertoes are an inbalance of intrinsic musculature and are likely to be hereditary. READ MORE

  • Are there home remedies for foot fungus?

The best treatment is always going to a podiatrist to confirm that it is fungus and be given with treatment options. Outside of that, it is important to practice anti-fungal techniques which includes spraying all of your footwear with Lysol about once every two weeks (making sure they are dry before wearing them again) and using an over the counter anti-fungal (tinea pedis) cream. I personally like Ketoconazole 2% cream which I prescribe for patients. There is also an oral medication you can take, which is more effective, however a trip to the doctor is necessary for that. All the best to you! READ MORE

  • How can I get rid of a fungal infection?

In my experience the best treatment of fungal toenails is an oral medication, Lamisil. You take one pill a day for 90 days, and I always get some baseline liver function enzyme labs beforehand to make sure there are no issues prior to starting therapy. Literature states over 80% clearance within 6-9 months but I have experienced closer to 95% clearance within a few short months. Call your local podiatrist and schedule an appointment to get rid of the fungus once and for all. READ MORE

  • Why does my big toe hurt when I apply too much pressure?

Well any excess pressure can cause pain anywhere on the body. That being said, an ingrowing toenail hurts in the corner where the nail meets the skin. There may be some associated redness and discolored drainage. Best to see your local podiatrist - an ingrowing toenail can cause an infection. READ MORE

  • Do bunion correctors work?

Simple answer - no they do not work. There is an intrinsic imbalance within your foot's tendons and this has caused the bunion deformity to continue to worsen. The corrector holds it in a more aligned position, but only while it is on, it is not addressing nor correcting the problem. It is important that she sees a podiatrist to get x-rays and make sure nothing else is going on - including advanced osteoarthritis. Best of luck to your mom! READ MORE

  • What should I avoid doing after my ingrown toenail removal?

Take it easy the day of. I usually tell my patients no restrictions as long as you are following your doctor's orders - I would stay away from beaches for about 3-4 weeks. Swimming pools are OK. READ MORE

  • What is the cause of my foot pain?

This sounds like a serious condition and there are a myriad of possible diagnoses - I would suggest you see a podiatrist immediately. There may be a need for a nerve work up and possibly some blood work. Best of luck to you and please, see someone soon. READ MORE
