  • Can drinking milk strengthen teeth?

Hello! Milk has a lot of important vitamins and minerals that contribute to the health of teeth and enamel. Milk is particularly important for teeth that are still in stages of development, as the calcium and phosphorous are incorporated into the teeth's enamel, helping them grow strong. Teeth continue to grow and develop until around 15 years of age, so milk in the diet would be particularly beneficial to teeth until this age. Once the teeth have fully matured, milk may still offer some benefits, but it is not as important for maintaining the strength of the teeth. While milk in moderation is good for the teeth, milk does have some natural sugars in it which could be damaging to teeth over time if too much milk is consumed. The best beverage for teeth is water, especially if the water is fluoridated (as it is in NYC and most major cities). Plain milk is second best for teeth. Flavored milks, such as chocolate and strawberry milk, have a lot of sugar in them and should not be consumed regularly, since drinking so much sugar could lead to cavities. • What can you do for sensitive teeth pain?

Hello, There are numerous causes for tooth sensitivity, and if your son's sensitivity is severe, I suggest having your son see a dentist for evaluation to rule out any causes that may require treatment. However, in the meantime I would recommend using a toothpaste designed to treat tooth sensitivity, such as Sensodyne. In order for this toothpaste to be effective, it needs to be used twice a day for about four weeks. I would also recommend avoiding bleaching and any highly acidic foods including sodas, juice, sour candies, as these can exacerbate sensitivity. Thank you, Dr. Khajavi READ MORE

  • Can you put braces on just a few teeth?

Hi, The short answer to your question is most likely no. The reason orthodontists usually put braces on all (most) teeth in the arch is because back teeth serve as anchors for straightening front teeth (where patients usually want their teeth straightened). Saying that, every case is different and its hard to speculate without seeing your teeth/mouth/X-rays. READ MORE

  • How to ease a child's nerves before the dentist?

Hello, Many children are apprehensive about visiting the dentist. I like to recommend reading a storybook about going to the dentist before your child's appointment. For example, there are books with Peppa Pig, Elmo, etc., that can help a child understand what to expect during their visit to the dentist. I also recommend talking with your child about what the first visit will entail, discussing that we will "count their teeth," brush them, and possibly take some "pictures" (X-rays) of their smile. Pediatric Dentists are well trained and accustomed to working with children who are anxious or fearful and will work with your child to help them feel comfortable during their visit. • When will my child's teeth get loose?

Hello, Baby teeth usually start to get loose around 6 years old, give or take a year depending on the child. If your child is still having some of her baby teeth grow in at 3 years old, she will likely be closer to 7 when her first teeth get loose. The first teeth to get loose are the lower front teeth. Thanks for your question and have a great day! Dr. Roxanna Khajavi READ MORE

  • Can I use dental floss for my 4 year old?

Hello, thank you for your question! It is safe to use dental floss on your four-year-old, however, not all four-year-old children need their teeth to be flossed due to the positioning of the teeth. If any of your child's teeth are close together with no spacing in between them, this is an area that brushing alone will not clean and flossing is recommended in these areas. Some four-year-olds have spacing in between all of their teeth, so if this is the case with your child, you wouldn't need to worry about flossing at this time. I recommend speaking with your pediatric dentist about whether or not your child would benefit from flossing at this age. If you do floss his or her teeth, I suggest using kid's flossers that come with a rounded handle (no sharp edges), as it is easier to handle than regular string floss. Most kids' flossers also come in kid-friendly flavors, since many children are resistant to the traditional minty flavor of floss. Just make sure to wipe off the floss as you go. • Do kids with lactose intolerance have weak teeth?

Hello! Thank you for your question. The concern in a dairy-free diet is the lack of calcium and vitamin d intake. Calcium is important for many bodily functions, including heart health, nerve function, and keeping teeth and bones strong. Vitamin D helps promote absorption of calcium in the body. At seven years old, your son has many permanent teeth that are in stages of development right now, so it is important to make sure he is getting enough calcium in his diet so that these teeth grow strong. It is also vital in the health of the gums and bones that support the teeth. Calcium intake is important throughout life! Many people who are lactose intolerant are also calcium deficient, but luckily there are many other natural non-dairy sources of calcium, such as dark leafy greens (like kale and spinach), seeds, beans, lentils, tofu, and almonds. You may also consider using a daily supplement. The National Institute of Health recommends 1000mg of calcium per day for your child's age group. I would recommend checking with your pediatrician prior to beginning any dietary supplements. I hope this helps. Best, Dr. Roxy READ MORE
