    Has an allergy to milk been confirmed by a board certified allergy center? The answer to your question depends on other factors such as other food allergies or other under/over-lying conditions. Our patients with only a milk allergy or even various food allergies typically do not have an issue with nutrition, and we do not offer council on the subject.     The immune system does have the potential to change over time in terms of allergies. What you’re describing may be anaphylaxis. Any time a sudden severe reaction or “event” occurs, especially involving breathing (lump in throat, throat swelling, shortness of breath, wheezing) or feeling dizzy/faint, seek emergency services immediately. Call 911 or have someone drive you to the Emergency Department. If you have been diagnosed by a board certified allergy center, you should have an epinephrine injector on hand at all times.   • Will allergy shots help my daughter?

    This is a good question. There are many factors that go into determining whether or not a patient is a candidate for allergy shots. Allergy shots are not only for maintenance of symptoms, but also have the potential for long term benefits post-therapy. However, the results are unique to the individual. Sometimes pharmacotherapy is the first-line for allergy treatment, and the decision to start shots is based on long-term goals. Other times, patients choose shots because they would like to limit pharmacotherapy. It is also important to know that not all patients who are on allergy shots are able to stop medications, but the medications seem to help more in conjunction with the shots. This is a very unique decision that should be discussed in person with a board certified allergy center. There are also conditions that mimic allergy symptoms. The most important step would be to determine whether or not your daughters symptoms are related to a true allergy/allergies. This is best determined by a board certified allergy center.   • What are the tests to diagnose allergies?

    This is the right question...how do you confirm? The first step is to have a conversation with a board certified allergy center. Although some testing techniques are done by other types of practices, often those techniques are partial. The depth of diagnosis achieved by a board certified allergy center are unique to the practice. We sometimes depend on a multitude of testing methods, and rely on the highest level of evidence based methods. Some methods used are: skin prick testing usually in conjunction with intradermal testing, and serum IgE testing. The skin prick testing done by a board certified allergy center is usually more in depth involving more allergens unique to the region’s “allergy profile,” and go a step further with intradermal testing for more accurate results. Some symptoms can mimic allergies. It is important to get this evaluated by and receive advise by an allergy provider. READ MORE
