Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Rishi R. Gupta, who serves patients in Frederick, Maryland.

Dr. Gupta specializes in caring for those suffering from knee and hip pain at the Mid-Maryland Musculoskeletal Institute of the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics in Frederick, Maryland. “Our goal at MMI Division of the Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics is to offer each patient the highest quality of life with the least risk. We offer a full range of orthopaedic care, including sports rehabilitation, joint replacement, rheumatology, hand and upper extremity care, foot and ankle care, and pediatric orthopaedics. Our physicians are committed to exhausting every conservative treatment option before recommending surgical intervention” as stated on the practice’s website. 

An expert in the field of orthopaedic surgery, Dr Gupta is also affiliated with Frederick Memorial Hospital and Monocacy Surgery Center. He seeks to understand each patient’s individual perspective in order to come to a mutual understanding for optimal care. When necessary, he uses minimally invasive surgical techniques that reduce pain, restore mobility, and promote a quick return to a normal, active lifestyle for patients suffering from osteoarthritis and other conditions. 

Some of his major accomplishments include being awarded the Resident Research Award (first place for two consecutive years) at the Maryland Orthopaedic Association Annual Meeting, being awarded the William G. Munns Memorial Prize for academic excellence in medical school, as well as being a finalist in the Open Health Heritage Challenge. 

After earning his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Dr. Gupta went on to complete his residency at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He also completed fellowships in adult reconstructive surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio, and in robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement surgery at the Coon Joint Replacement Institute of St. Helena Hospital in St. Helena, California. 

In order to stay up to date in his field, he maintains membership with several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, and the Maryland Orthopaedic Association. Additionally, he is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons, as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

Orthopaedic surgery or orthopaedics is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and nonsurgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders. Dr. Gupta’s expertise includes direct anterior hip replacement. His specialty interests consist of revision of painful or failed total joint replacements and complex hip and knee problems.
