Sometimes the body/muscles with tighten up when in rest and loosen up with motion or activity. Stress could be the main factor in your son. It would be a good idea to have him assessed by a chiropractor to see if it may be an option to help with his discomfort. There are a few options. Ice and heat at home may help. Without knowing your daughter's history it's difficult to say what would be the best treatment option for her; however, chiropractic treatment is an option to help relieve lower back pain and has helped many of my patients.
