Get to know Dermatologist Dr. Ali Hendi, who serves patients in Chevy Chase, Maryland.
A widely recognized skin cancer specialist, Dr. Hendi has been caring for patients in the Washington, D.C. area for over a decade. A board-certified dermatologist and fellowship-trained Mohs and reconstructive surgeon, he opened a state-of-the-art surgical facility, dedicated to the treatment of skin cancers, in Chevy Chase, Maryland in 2008.
Since then, he has performed over 14,000 surgeries using the Mohs technique, a procedure considered the gold standard in treating skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. He has the distinction of being the only Mohs surgeon in the DC metropolitan area who treats melanoma with Mohs surgery.
Active in the academic arena, Dr. Hendi is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Georgetown University Medical Center. He is also involved in resident education within the Dermatology Residency Program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
Following his undergraduate studies in Microbiology and Immunology, Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa, at the University of Miami, Dr. Hendi went on to pursue his medical education. He earned his medical degree through the Medical Scholars Program of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Wanting to further his training, he completed his internship in internal medicine and his residency in dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh. This was followed by fellowship training in Mohs and reconstructive surgery under Drs. John Zitelli and David Brodland, former presidents of the American College of Mohs Surgery.
Taking pride in caring for patients with compassion, Dr. Hendi is board-certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology, a voluntary, non-profit, private, autonomous organization formed for the primary purpose of protecting the public interest by establishing and maintaining high standards of training, education, and qualifications of physicians rendering care in dermatology. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery.
Advocating for regular skin cancer screenings and sun safety, Dr. Hendi regularly appears in television and print media. He has been a primary investigator of two research projects related to melanoma diagnosis and is the inventor of the Hendi-Frazier and Hendi-Roth skin hooks.
The doctor’s academic endeavors also encompass research and publishing, with over 20 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters. His most recent book, the Atlas of Skin Cancers, was published in 2011. He serves as a reviewer for the journal Dermatologic Surgery and is a frequent speaker at national and international meetings.
