My responsibility as a surgeon is to balance a patient's treatment needs with quality of life considerations” expressed the doctor
Originally from northern California, Dr. Teng made her way to the University of California, San Diego for college, and double majored in Biochemistry/Cell Biology and Anthropology/Archaeology, which allowed her to join an archaeological dig in Jordan. She combined her two interests to write an honors thesis researching ancient DNA extracted from the samples that we excavated.
After college, she spent three years in Yokohama, Japan working in an allergy and immunology research facility. After returning to the United States, she completed her medical education on the east coast at New York Medical College and her residency in general surgery at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital. Finally, she traveled back to California for a fellowship in surgical oncology at the John Wayne Cancer Institute before joining Kaiser Permanente.
Subsequent to her education, the doctor attained board certification in surgical oncology and general surgery through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.
In her free time, Dr. Teng enjoys the outdoors, painting, and baking. She strives to have a green thumb but has had variable success. She also has a particular interest in languages and history, and is fluent in English, Mandarin, and Spanish.
