Her professional repertoire encompasses a diverse array of settings, from private practice to clinics, hospitals, and community-based initiatives. Her licensure in California, Texas, and certification under PSYPACT underscores her commitment to breaking down barriers to care, enabling her to reach individuals across state lines and provide much-needed support and intervention. Central to her approach is the empowerment of individuals and families, facilitated through comprehensive psychoeducation and advocacy efforts aimed at fostering autonomy and resilience.

Educated in California, Dr. Burns received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of California, Davis in 2013. However, it was her subsequent immersion in the realm of clinical psychology that truly defined her professional trajectory. During her undergraduate years, Dr. Burns volunteered at the esteemed UC Davis MIND Institute as a research assistant.  Her formative experiences extended to her role as a behavior technician, where she honed her expertise while pursuing her undergraduate studies.

Undertaking her graduate studies at Alliant International University in Sacramento, she embarked on a transformative path, culminating in the attainment of both a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Psychology degree in 2017 and 2019, respectively. Her dedication to individuals with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs) was evident early on, as she delved into the field as a practicum student at the UC Davis MIND Institute.

Continuing her journey at the UC Davis MIND Institute, Dr. Burns underwent specialized training under the tutelage of leading autism researchers and clinicians, further enriching her understanding of NDDs. Her commitment to expanding access to care manifested in her participation in the Leadership and Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program, a testament to her advocacy and dedication to improving outcomes for individuals and families affected by NDDs. During her graduate program, Dr. Burns broadened and deepened her skills in trauma and community mental health by working as a practicum student and intern at the UC Davis CAARE Center in Sacramento, CA; VA Hospital in Mather, CA; and The Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Services (CAPS) Clinic in Sacramento, CA, respectively.

Beyond her clinical practice, she is deeply engaged in community initiatives, serving as a co-facilitator of Sankofa, a vital parent support group for African American families raising children with NDDs. Dr. Burns served for two years as California’s Children’s Mental Health Champion, which further exemplifies her dedication to systemic change, as she collaborated with stakeholders to promote mental health promotion and forge meaningful connections across sectors.
