Get to know Endocrinologist Dr. Leila Shobab, who serves patients in Washington, D.C.

A dual board-certified endocrinologist, Dr. Shobab is an Assistant Professor (Clinician Research Track) within the Department of Medicine at Georgetown University & a Clinical Investigator within the joint Endocrine Program at MedStar Georgetown University-MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

She values every one of her patients and cares very deeply for the health and well-being of each individual patient. Her guiding principle in clinical medicine is to provide trustworthy, respectful, non-judgmental and patient-centered care for each individual patient.

Academically, Dr. Shobab completed her medical school studies and residency training in internal medicine at the University of British Columbia. She then went to perform her fellowship in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine, and her research fellowship in thyroid cancer at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. 

Devoted to her specialty, the doctor is board-certified in internal medicine & endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Actively involved in clinical and basic science research, Dr. Shobab focuses on thyroid cancer and other thyroid diseases. The overarching objective of her research program is to better understand the behavior of aggressive, treatment-refractory thyroid cancer and develop sex-specific and targeted treatment strategies for advanced thyroid cancer. Her goal as a clinicial scientist is to develop a program in basic and translational research that determines the molecular interactions underlying sex-dimorphism in thyroid cancer pathophysiology, progression and response to therapy. She is currently collaborating on several research projects with colleagues at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and Uniformed Services University Health Sciences Hospital (USUHS). 

Dr. Shobab is a Research Affiliate at that Cancer Host Interaction program – Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. She is a member of many professional organizations, including the American Thyroid Association and the Endocrine Society.

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. Endocrinologists have the training to diagnose and treat hormone imbalances and problems by helping to restore the normal balance of hormones in the body. The common diseases and disorders of the endocrine system that endocrinologists deal with include diabetes mellitus, as well as adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid disorders, among others.
