As the Director of the Infant Apnea Program, Dr. Nicolwala is at the forefront of innovation in neonatal care. He is currently spearheading the introduction of Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POC U/S) in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), a groundbreaking approach that enhances diagnostic capabilities and improves patient outcomes. His passion for frontline service drives him to ensure that sick children receive the best possible care, while also guiding parents through the emotional complexities of having a critically ill infant.
Dr. Nicolwala’s journey in medicine began in the United Kingdom, where he was born, before moving to the United States in 1997. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Texas A&M University in 2009, followed by his Medical Degree from the Texas A&M School of Medicine in 2015. His pediatric residency at WVU Medicine (July 2015 to June 2018) and subsequent fellowship in neonatology at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital (June 2018 to July 2021) equipped him with the skills necessary to excel in his current role.
In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Nicolwala serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. His research interests include Antibiotic Stewardship, Point-of-Care Ultrasound, and the integration of technology to enhance neonatal care. Through these initiatives, he aims to advance the science of neonatology while ensuring that patient care remains at the forefront.
Dr. Nicolwala is actively involved in several professional organizations, including the New York Perinatal Society, the Section of Perinatal Pediatrics of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association, and the American College of Physicians, among others. His participation in these organizations reflects his commitment to staying at the forefront of pediatric care and contributing to the broader medical community.
Outside of his medical practice, Dr. Nicolwala enjoys listening to music, drawing from his experience as a former radio DJ in college. His multifaceted interests reflect his belief in the importance of balance and well-being in both personal and professional realms.
