Can using vaseline during sex have any side effects?
While petrolatum is a terrific emollient, and we use it commonly in dermatology for a variety of reasons, it's use as a sex lubricant is controversial. In general, it tends to be very sticky and goopy, which can cause increased friction compared to water based lubricants. Further, if used for vaginal sex there are concerns it may disrupt the function of normal vaginal secretions by forming a barrier between the mucosal membrane. Therefore, I recommend obtaining a product specifically made for that purpose. Thank you for the question. READ MORE
Skin is itchy after sun exposure, what can I do?
Good morning, Itchy skin after sun exposure can be caused by a number of different conditions. The most common is a disorder called polymorphous light eruption (PMLE), although there are also autoimmune diseases such as lupus, dermatomyositis that can cause this, along with allergies that arise only when exposed to sun. I would suggest evaluation by a dermatologist to eliminate worrisome causes. You may also read an article published this past month in the Anacortes American newspaper, where I answered questions on this very subject. The link is here. I was very happy with my recent visit to Dr. Hines for my full body yearly scan, and also addressing some additional skin issues/concerns I am having. I have had a very difficult time finding a local dermatologist that I feel is doing a good job checking my skin and wanting to support my health. Since I have a history of multiple melanomas it is very important that I find a dermatologist that is knowledgeable and takes care to make sure I stay clear of future issues. Dr. Hines is the first dermatologist that I have found in the area, that took the time to do a thorough body check for the melanoma, and also checked for other skin issues as well. He is very discreet and definitely makes you feel at ease during the exam, which is helpful in such a vulnerable setting. Dr. Hines and his nurse were both extremely helpful prior, during, and after the visit. I was promptly called after test results were received back a few days later and put my mind at ease that the pathology was negative. I am very happy to finally have a great dermatologist on my team here in Anacortes and would definitely recommend him to anyone.

I went in convinced I had a skin cancer on my nose. I'd spoken to Dr Hines when I called for an appointment and they were able to get me in within less than 7 working days. I was immediately greeted and taken into an examination room by Nurse Nancy who took my info and explained the process. Dr. Hines came in when I was ready, greeted me by name, and shook my hand. He then gently and thoroughly began his examination focusing on my nose, face, and scalp. He made sure he was looking at what had concerned me and was able to relieve my mind of my concerns and not make me feel foolish about my fears. He then completed a complete skin exam, asking me medical history questions as needed, and he identified a spot on my forearm that had been there so long I'd gotten used to it. It was an actinic keratosis, a non-cancerous growth that might become cancerous in the future. With my permission he eliminated it with spray liquid nitrogen right then. Nurse Nancy, who was in the room taking notes, explained aftercare and we were done. I'll be back if I ever have concerns and am confident Dr Hines will be able to address them with knowledge, skill, and kindness.

Totally thrilled with my visit with Dr Hines and Nurse Nancy. Both very professional and related well to me. I found it an intriguing discussion about my visit and the field of dermatology. For me the office was close, scheduling was easy and parking was great.

Already recommended Dr. Hines to friends. It was a great visit for my daughter and I really liked that it was more than just diagnosis but having an end goal to aim for. Thank you!

I am very glad to have gone to Dr. Hines’s clinic in Anacortes. When I called to make an appointment, he answered the phone and spent an ample amount of time talking to me in order to completely understand what I needed. I was able to get an appointment within a couple of days. When I arrived at his office he came out to visit with me and to discuss different ways to treat my skin problem. We then went into the treatment room which was clean, pleasant and well organized. He introduced me to his assistant (who I also liked) and then described in greater detail different treatment options. I chose one and he proceeded in a professional and gentle way, and then asked if I had recently had a full-body skin exam. As I had not been satisfied with the thoroughness of the one I had just had, it seemed like a good idea. Dr. Hines found a couple of pre-cancerous areas that needed to be treated. At the end of my appointment the assistant talked to me about skin cleansers and moisturizers, emphasizing gentle, inexpensive products that don’t contain unnecessary ingredients. I am very happy to have found a dermatologist who happily and kindly offers all of the above.

I cannot recommend this practice highly enough. Doctor and staff were extremely personable and caring to my concerns and did not try and push or recommended any unnecessary procedures. They truly care about the whole person.

My husband and I have found Dr. HInes to be very responsive, articulate, thorough and always kind. He takes extra time with his patients explaining all facets of the issue. I have had various skin growths removed with no problem and my husband has had several procedures performed and was pleased with all of the results. I would definitely recommend him to others.

Very professional, knowledgeable and personable. He has a genuine interest in his patients and takes time to talk with them and explain his diagnosis and treatment thoroughly even using visuals. All this without trying to run up the bill! The best dermatologist in this area!

I developed an extreme rash on a Thursday, I went to the hospital on a Saturday night because I couldn't stop scratching. The ER dr. told me after and hour wait, she had no idea what it was, to find a Dermatologist. So I called Dr. Hines to see if he could get me in anytime soon, expecting at least a week wait time. I live in the San Juan islands, he fit me in the next morning, I was a new patient for him, but he took me in immediately, knew what it was, and put me on meds. that helped right away. His staff was very good to. Loved my experience, would highly reccomend.

I moved to Anacortes recently from a city with a huge hospital and by passed the clinic as it blended in with other houses. I was skeptical, like the dentist in the strip mall offering a super discount to pull all your teeth. However, I trusted the glowing user reviews and they were right, Anacortes Dermatology is a gem. It is expected that any doctor you go to will fix the problem. What sets Anacortes Dermatology apart is that Dr. Hines is genuine. He and his staff treated me more like a family friend than patient X. They even gave me some job leads. The entire process was so much better than I was used to. Dr. Wirt (Andy) Hines will be my dermatologist from now on.

A most reassuring visit. All presented problems were solved with patience and thorough followthrough Top notch care!

Dr. Hines's assessments are holistic, sensitive, and comprehensive. He really takes the time to understand the context of the phenomena before him. He treats four of my family members, each with individualized goals and methods that take the big picture into account. We look forward to seeing him because he lifts our spirits at the same time as he understands and supports us with the challenges we face. He doesn't overtreat! He's good with teenagers and seniors!! We travel from far away to see him, and he accommodates our travel needs with extraordinary caring.

I've known Dr. Hines now for years. I first met him when I had a sore on my finger that wouldn't heal and he quickly diagnosed it as a basal cell carcinoma. In a few days he removed it using MOHS surgery. Since then I see him every year for a checkup. He is extremely thorough, very knowledgeable and you can even ask him questions! I highly recommend him for any skin condition as well as general medicine knowledge.

Dr. Hines is the best dermatologist my husband and I have ever been treated by. He takes his time and explains what he is doing and why, responds promptly to phone messages and let us know the results of a biopsy within 2 days - on a holiday weekend. HIs staff is very friendly and helpful in every way.

Dr Andy saw me, working in appointment, due to a sudden hair loss issue. Listening to the history, examination, giving clear options on treatment. I drove 1.5 hrs to this office and will make the drive again. Five star care!
