Marco Vinicio Medina-Zea, MD, FACS, FASMBS, currently serves as the Director of the Metabolic Bariatric Program at Austin Regional Clinic in Austin, Texas. Dr. Medina-Zea has obtained various board certifications, including General Surgery Certification from the Si/Xi Robotic Surgery Certification Program at Morristown Medical Center in 2017. He has expertise in the fields of anal/rectal surgery, bariatric surgery, breast disease and cancer, treatment of gallstones and gallbladder surgery, management of GERD, hernia repair, surgery for skin and soft tissue conditions, as well as thyroid disease and cancer
Dr. Medina-Zea earned his B.S. in Biology and Chemical Sciences from Rafael Borja High School in Cuenca, Ecuador in 2001. He completed his medical education at Universidad de Cuenca in Cuenca, Ecuador in 2008. Following his medical education, Dr. Medina-Zea pursued his residency at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ, which he completed in 2017. Additionally, Dr. Medina-Zea worked as a Research Fellow at NYU Langone Medical Center Localio Lab in New York, NY from 2010 to 2012. Dr. Medina-Zea is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgery and the American Society of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. Furthermore, he is a member of the American College of Colorectal Surgery, the American Medical Association, and the Travis County Medical Society.
Dr. Medina-Zea has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to the medical field and was honored with the ICU Compassionate Care Award at SICU Morristown Medical Center in 2014. He performs a wide range of surgical procedures, both major and minor, at several renowned medical centers, including Cedar Park Regional Medical Center, Seton Medical Center Austin, St. David's North Austin Medical Center, St. David’s Surgical Hospital, and St. David’s Round Rock Hospital.
Driven by a deep-rooted desire to assist those in need, Dr. Medina-Zea chose to study medicine. Surgery, in particular, has allowed him to utilize his hands as a means of healing. He finds fulfillment in all aspects of surgery, with a particular focus on bariatric and robotic surgery. Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Medina-Zea cherishes spending quality time with his family. He also enjoys engaging in physical fitness activities, such as exercising and running. Additionally, he has a passion for music and the arts.
