Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. John C. L’Insalata, who serves patients in Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York.

Dr. L’Insalata is a trusted orthopaedic surgeon and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (FAAOS). He has been proudly serving patients at Orthopaedic Surgical Consultant, P.C. with offices in Brooklyn and Staten Island, New York since 1985.

Orthopaedic Surgical Consultant, P.C. is a comprehensive, patient-oriented center of orthopaedic excellence. Dr. L’Insalata and his staff are dedicated to providing optimal state-of-the-art treatment to patients of all ages in a friendly, pleasant environment. Their goal is to allow patients to resume their normal activities as quickly and as pain-free as possible.

With a focus on premium orthopaedic care and impeccable service, Dr. L’Insalata treats a variety of orthopaedic conditions ranging from simple sprains and sports injuries to complex reconstructive surgeries and fracture care. He and his staff provide care to a diverse group of patients ranging from infants to octogenarians. This includes adolescents and teenagers, collegiate and professional athletes, weekend warriors, injured workers, and accident victims. Commonly performed arthroscopic and reconstructive surgeries include complex procedures of the knee, shoulder, ankle and elbow as well as the operative and non-operative treatment of fractures.

In addition to his expertise in orthopaedic surgery, Dr. L’Insalata specializes in sports medicine/arthroscopy, treatment of shoulder and knee disorders, and joint reconstruction. He applies the principles of sports medicine developed via the treatment of collegiate and professional athletes to the treatment of each of his patients. This emphasizes the use of non-operative modalities including proper rehabilitation and injury prevention, as well as minimally invasive and arthroscopic surgery to allow patients to return to full, pain-free activity as quickly and safely as possible.

Among the doctor’s hospital affiliations, he collaborates with Lutheran Medical Center (Brooklyn), Richmond University Medical Center (Staten Island), Staten Island University Hospital, and Hospital for Special Surgery (Manhattan). He is also a Clinical Instructor in Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College.

On the subject of his educational background, Dr. L’Insalata graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College in 1986, receiving the General Excellence Award. He received his medical degree in 1990 from Cornell University Medical College, where he received several academic honors, including the General Excellence Award. He completed his internship in general surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. 

Continuing his training, he completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He then completed fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where he served as team physician for the University of Pittsburgh athletic teams and the Robert Morris College football team, as well as worked professionally with the Pittsburgh Ballet. 

Subsequent to his education, he attained board certification in orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

In order to advance his efforts, Dr. L’Insalata remains a member of a number of professional organizations, including the Medical Society of the State of New York, the New York State Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Brooklyn Orthopaedic Society, the Bay Ridge Medical Society, the Richmond County Medical Society, the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and the Eastern Orthopaedic Association.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.

The author of numerous orthopaedic articles and book chapters, Dr. L’Insalata has presented nationally and internationally on the treatment of athletic injuries, arthroscopic surgery, and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee. 

Earning multiple awards and accolades throughout his extensive career, he has been the recipient of The Lewis Clark Wagner Award for Research – Hospital for Special Surgery (1995); Nominee: Charles S. Neer Award, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (1994); The John Metcalf Polk Prize for General Excellence, Weill Cornell Medical College (1990); The Clarence C. Coryell Prize in Medicine, Weill Cornell Medical College (1990); The Robert M. Lintz Prize for Efficiency in Rheumatic Diseases, Weill Cornell Medical College (1990); The Lemmon Company Outstanding Student Award, Weill Cornell Medical College (1990); The Lange Medical Publications Award for Outstanding Achievement, Weill Cornell Medical College (1990); The Draddy Medal for General Excellence in Engineering, Manhattan College (1986); and The Finn Medal for Excellence in Electrical Engineering, Manhattan College (1986).
