Dr. Galbut, a renowned Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, is recognized by his peers as consistently producing the best outcomes in heart, lung, and vascular surgery.

Having been practicing for more than 25 years in the Miami community, he has performed more than 4,500 coronary artery bypass operations and 1,500 valve surgeries. He has extensive experience with aortic and mitral valve replacement or repair, and complex cardiac surgery. He is known for using arterial grafts in coronary artery bypass surgery which gives the best long-term results, and is currently a faculty member of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. 

Graduating 3rd in his class of 600 students at New York University, Dr. Galbut earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He completed his surgical internship at Harvard Medical School and his residency in general surgery at Columbia University Presbyterian Medical Center. He then went on to complete his residency in cardiothoracic surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami.

The beginning half of his career was at the Miami Heart Institute. Dr Galbut benefitted from his colleagues and an exciting environment of cardiac surgery. He developed a strong interest in clinical research and produced several leading publications in coronary artery bypass. At the time of Miami Heart Institute’s closing in the year 2000, he had become established as a pre-eminent cardiac surgeon.

From 2002 until 2007, Dr Galbut served as Chief of Cardiac Surgery and was a founding member of the South Miami Heart Center of Baptist Health. He was the signatory and a founder of the Open Heart Program at Aventura Medical Center and served as Chief of Surgery. Following this, he served as a Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery in the Jackson Health System. 

Dr. Galbut has been a Fellow in the American College of Surgery and is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Dedicated to excellence in heart health, Dr. Galbut has gained an international reputation based on his volume of surgery, outcome data, contribution to the literature and education of colleagues. He has published more than 30 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented numerous papers at national meetings. He is also the author of “My Father’s Final Journey” which tells the story of his father’s death, his family’s unity, and his experience as a heart surgeon.

An authority in his field, Dr Galbut was ranked “Top Doctor in Thoracic surgery and among the “Best Physicians in South Florida”  by Miami Metro Magazine and U.S.News & World Report ranks him as a Top Surgeon in the Country. He is also listed in Castle and Connolly’s “Top Doctors”, 2012-2020, that recognizes the “top 1% of doctors in 65 specialties in the nation”. He has achieved a rare distinction of “Honor Roll Physician” and a ‘Five Star Ranking” by Health Grades.

A native Miamian, Dr. Galbut was born into an illustrious family which settled in Miami Beach in 1930. He met his wife, Gita, during his residency in New York, and they are the recipients of many philanthropic and civic awards. They have six daughters, five of which have settled in South Florida.
