Get to know Cardiothoracic Surgeon Dr. Azmi Atiya, who serves patients throughout the State of California.

Dr. Atiya has been providing excellent cardiovascular treatment and cardiothoracic surgical care for more than 20 years. As the current Director of Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Oncology at Tarzana Medical Center and Chief of Staff at Northridge Medical Center, he has gained a reputation for thorough patient care and in-depth knowledge of complex medical procedures. He leads a team of skilled surgeons and medical professionals, and is dedicated to helping patients with his skill and knowledge in the field of cardiovascular and thoracic medicine.

Educated in the United States, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychobiology from the University of California, Riverside in 1988, and graduated with his medical degree from Albany Medical College in 1992. He completed his residency in general surgery at the UCLA Medical Center in 1998, where he was Chief Resident. Finally, he completed a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in 2001, and was named Chief Fellow in his final year.

An expert in his field, the doctor is board-certified in thoracic and cardiac surgery by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery, which is an American surgical organization devoted to surgery of the chest.

Moreover, he is board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

In his professional experience, Dr. Atiya can also be found on staff at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, West Hills Hospital and Medical Center, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Sherman Oaks Hospital, Encino Hospital Medical Center, Los Robles Regional Medical Center, and Antelope Valley Hospital.

As a guest lecturer at multiple medical events throughout California, as well as the author of numerous presentations, publications, and abstracts, he keeps up-to-date on current procedures, including robotic thoracic surgery, minimally invasive mitral and aortic valve surgery, and endovascular aneurysm repairs.

Cardiothoracic surgery is the field of medicine involved in the surgical treatment of organs inside the thorax. Cardiothoracic surgeons are medical doctors who specialize in surgical procedures inside the thorax, which may involve the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs in the chest. Alongside performing surgery, they also diagnose and treat diseases of these organs.

Recognized for his skill and medical knowledge, Dr. Atiya has been the recipient of various accolades, including the Daggett Prizes in the Anatomies from Albany Medical College, Outstanding Resident of the Year, Dept. of Surgery at UCLA Medical Center, Eleventh Annual SSAT/Ross Residents and Fellows Research Award, and Wyeth-Ayerst American College of Surgeons Resident Reporter.
