Get to know Neurosurgeon Dr. Asem Salma, who serves patients throughout the State of Ohio.

A remarkable figure in the realm of neurosurgery, Dr. Salma is affiliated with Mercy Health – St. Rita’s Medical Center and Mercy Health – Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Throughout his distinguished career, his expertise spans a wide range of intricate and specialized fields within neurosurgery. His dedication to enhancing the field of neurosurgery, coupled with his active involvement in professional societies, positions him as a trailblazer and a leader in the realm of skull base, brain tumors, functional neurosurgery, and spine surgery. 

With a broad educational background, Dr. Salma graduated with his medical degree from the University of Aleppo in 1999. Following his graduation, he embarked on a path of continuous learning and excellence, with an internship at the same institution in the same year, displaying his commitment to her chosen field.

Subsequently, his quest for knowledge and mastery led him to Damascus University Hospitals, where he pursued his residency. To further refine his skills and specialize in complex areas of neurosurgery, he embarked on a series of fellowships at prestigious institutions. The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center became a pivotal point in his academic and professional journey, where he completed fellowships in 2010 and 2011. In 2014, he pursued another fellowship, this time at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria. 

In addition to his academic and research achievements, Dr. Salma is an active member of various esteemed neurosurgical societies, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopedic Surgeons (AANOS), and the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. 

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, surgical treatment, and rehabilitation of disorders which affect any portion of the nervous system including the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and extra-cranial cerebrovascular system. Neurosurgeons are doctors who diagnose and treat problems with the nervous system, often by performing surgery on the brain or spine. They treat strokes, tumors, cervical and lumbar disc disease, infections, and head or spinal cord injuries.
