  • How can I treat pericoronitis at home?

There is really no effective way to treat pericoronitis at home. Your dentist will need to properly diagnose and prescribe antibiotic as needed. The wisdom tooth involved may need to be removed as soon as possible to prevent more severe infection. READ MORE

  • Do fillings need to be replaced?

Hi, It sounds like the fillings had been replaced because of cosmetic reasons. Since the back teeth are not as noticeable as the front teeth, it is usually not recommended for regular replacement of fillings in back teeth, unless it's recommended by your dentist due to defect or cavities under the filling. Hope this helps. Dr. Kathleen Young READ MORE

  • What does bone loss in the teeth mean?

Hi, Bone loss is the result of periodontal disease, which is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard structures that support the teeth. People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes. In fact, periodontal disease is often considered a complication of diabetes. Those people who don't have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. In order to control the progression of periodontal disease, you may want to work with your doctor in getting your diabetes under control. Non-surgical treatments such as scaling and root planing, localized antibiotic and laser treatment are typically used to treat early stage of periodontal disease. For more advanced periodontal disease, regenerative procedures are often used for treatment. During this procedure, your periodontist folds back the gum tissue and removes the disease-causing bacteria. Membranes, bone grafts or tissue-stimulating proteins can be used to encourage your body's natural ability to regenerate bone and tissue. With a combination of daily oral hygiene and professional maintenance care, you will have an increased chance to combat periodontal disease. Please let me know if you have further questions. • How can I close the gap between my frontal teeth?

Hi there, Porcelain veneers are usually good options to fill in minor gaps less than 2mm wide between front teeth. But if there is still a 2mm gap between the front teeth after two years of braces, porcelain veneers may not be an option for you. A cosmetic evaluation will need to be performed first, and during the process the space and sizes of all front teeth should be measured. Please let me know if you have other questions. • Clicking in my jaw

Hi there, Popping of the jaw without pain is common. It is often caused by grinding, clenching, bite misalignment or arthritis of the TMJ. Popping and clicking of the jaw is an indication of imbalance or disorder of the temporomandibular joints (TMD). Symptoms of pain starts to develop when the joints are compromised, which is often associated with erosion of the disk and cartilage damage. We treat our TMD patients with a special bite appliance that helps relieve tension of the facial muscles around the joints and protects the TMJ from further damage. Although popping of the TMJ may not cause immediate problem, I would advise you to get evaluated by a dentist who has experience in treating TMD. Hope this helps. Kathleen Young, DDS READ MORE

  • Can I whiten my teeth with baking soda alone?

Hi, Baking soda is a mild abrasive, just like the whitening ingredients in some of the whitening toothpaste, such as magnesium carbonate, hydrated aluminum oxides and calcium carbonate. Abrasives will remove some surface stain, but not deeply embedded stain. Going to see a dental professional will usually get more noticeable results. Professional whitening product will not cause damage to teeth as along as it is used properly and infrequently. There are numerous bleaching products to choose from, make sure it is high in quality and produces minimal sensitivity. Hope this helps. Dr. Kathleen Young READ MORE
