Get to know Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr. Phillip H. Omohundro, who serves patients in Silver Spring, Maryland.

A renowned orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Omohundro is in practice with Orthopaedic Specialists of Metropolitan Washington, Division in Silver Spring, Maryland. His specialties include sports medicine, cartilage transplantation, knee reconstruction, shoulder reconstruction, and women’s sports injuries.

For more than 40 years, Orthopaedic Specialists of Metropolitan Washington (OSMW) has been providing leading edge, full service orthopaedic care to the citizens of Montgomery County, Maryland, and the surrounding metropolitan area. The board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons at OSMW have the expertise to treat hip and knee, spine, neck, hand and wrist, foot and ankle, as well as shoulder and elbow conditions and injuries. They are specially trained in joint replacement, arthroscopic surgery, fractures, trauma, and sports medicine. 

Known for his vast experience in the field of orthopaedics, Dr. Omohundro is also affiliated with Holy Cross Hospital, Providence Hospital, MedStar Washington Hospital Center, and The Surgery Center of Chevy Chase.

Regarding his educational background, Dr. Omohundro earned his medical degree at the Howard University College of Medicine in 1980. He followed up by completing a residency in general surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in 1982, and residencies in orthopaedic surgery at Howard University and Deaconess Hospital in 1986 and 1987, respectively. Finally, he completed a fellowship at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center.

He served as the University physician at Catholic University for 17 years as well as worked with St. John’s College High School and H.D. Woodson High School after establishing Capitol Sports Medicine, which is now merged with Metro Orthopaedics & Sports Therapy.

A member of the American Academy of Disability Evaluating Physicians, Dr. Omohundro is board-certified in orthopaedic surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopaedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopaedic surgeons.

Orthopaedic surgery is the branch of surgery concerned with conditions involving the musculoskeletal system. Orthopaedic surgeons use both surgical and non-surgical means to treat musculoskeletal trauma, spine diseases, sports injuries, degenerative diseases, infections, tumors, and congenital disorders.
